This is a type of random fractal in essentially the same vein as classic fBm/plasma/landscape fractals but the image is created using repeated random folding/pleating followed by rotation/s.
It was inspired by the folding used in the (now classic) Mandelbox algorithm - only here just applied in 2D and with the added random element.
In this case "self-rotation" is used as z*(z/cabs(z))^3 - applied on each iteration after the folding - this results in the natural angle of z being increased by 3 times its value i.e. the new z value has the same magnitude but 4 times its original angle.
