Thanks - in case you're wondering the colouring is simply the smooth iteration value - it works because "solid" is entirely based on the distance estimate threshold (i.e. the max. iter. is set so high that it's never reached) hence the 3D outline of smooth iteration does not match the 3D outline of the object.
