can i suggest you mess around with shading a bit? experiment with angularly varying colours (blending between normal and glancing angles), fresnel terms, environment mapping, ...
I will be playing with the alternatives you suggested for the ambient and specular terms but I'll be leaving anything requiring further ray-tracing until I do the class-based formulas.
