I was asked to shed some light onto my work process, so I recorded the steps in the creation of Baronne de Kotokro :D This is not a tutorial, mind you, just a look over my shoulder from start to finish. Everybody has their own way of working, though maybe someone will pick up something they hadn't thought of along the way.

The finished piece is here: [link]

The file is nearly 2 MB, I apologize for that, but I tried to cover everything I thought might be useful. If you're curious about something I didn't mention, feel free to ask. Enjoy!

Wonderful work, I was wondering if you could elaborate on the statement "I handpick each glyph in illustrator"?

Some fonts have more than one glyph (character shape) for each letter, and that changes automatically depending on the string of characters you use. But in Illustrator you can select a glyph yourself, by going to Type >Glyphs where you'll find all a font's glyphs laid out. Double-click to insert the glyph of your choice into your text :)

whow... that's beautiful! -sorry just HAD to say that ^^-

but I've got some questions, since I use a completely other method but the result simply isn't how I want to get it.

- how do you thicken the lines? (while inking) when I try to thicken lines... my drawing ends up looking... messy!
- you say you fill in the colours? ehh? I don't completely get it... when you simply fill in, your lineart looks crappy afterwards and you haven't got the colours on different layers, so that's really hard shading.
- mmm not completely getting the way you're shading... something about a different layer...
- just one thing.. is there some kind of "general rule" for shading and highlights, or just... you know... intuition? since my shading never looks really....real

still stumbling about how to create such beautiful lineart... really I'm speechless...!! so...beautiful O.O

What Photoshop system do you use in your tutorials? :? I have photoshop 5 and I don't follow much of the commands used in your tutorial. I'm sorry to bother but if you mentioned this and I missed the answer I apologise. ^^;

I use Photoshop CS (1 at the time, 3 now) but much of these commands didn't change since photoshop 5. It's only the interface that was rearranged, as I recall.
