EDIT: Made this available on a few products on Cafepress :)

I made this yesterday; for a few days I had been working on a calligraphic challenge to myself, which was to create a square Kufi composition of a certain number of blessings that are recurrent motifs in traditional (lay) calligraphy. I managed it yesterday morning after several solutions I wasn't happy with (I discuss them on my sketch blog). The rule of square Kufi is that the balance of black and white must be absolutely maintained, meaning equal width everywhere. Beyond that, the shape of the letters can be stretched sometimes beyond recognition, and legibility is irrelevant. I wanted to avoid absurd stretching though, and keep them reasonably legible. I also wanted a spiraling movement as opposed to having everything horizontally, and, though it makes things a lot more complicated, I wanted to keep the dots (which are usually eliminated) because they add a lot of visual interest.
The 9 words are:
Benediction بركة
Good fortune يمن
Pleasure سرور
Grace نعمة
Peace سلام
Exultation غبطة
Health عافية
Happiness سعادة
Light نور

So, when I managed the design, I felt like reproducing it in real, and pulled out one of the gorgeous papers I had been keeping forever. The photo is poor but it allows its white-on-white silkscreen pattern to show. The dots are gilded, the rest painted in sepia watercolor, through which the paper's pattern peeks. The total piece is 46x46cm.

I'm selling the original for $50 (shipping included) – note me if interested. sold!

BTW: can you reference the rules for this kind of calligraphy, the way you did for arabesque patterns?

I toyed with the idea, but I have no idea how to explain them to someone not familiar with the Arabic script: it takes deep familiarity with the letters (and preferably the language too) to be able to tweak them and have an intuitive understanding of what works and what doesn't. Even native readers would take some schooling to get it.

Yeah it's sad, I'd love to spread the love!

Lovely!
You know what would be really cool? If you could do the same for other alphabets :)

It wouldn't have the same value I'm afraid, as they don't work this way and their anatomy is based on different things. Arabic is really unique!

This makes me want to get out and buy a copy of Arabic for Dummies...

and as to applying it on products... small versions could be created in wood or mosaic tiles to hang above the front door as a blessing to visitors :)

:giggle:

That would be lovely, but pretty complicated... For now at least it's modestly on some cafepress products [link] :)
