Cultivating Your Drawing Skills
I believe drawing skills are never innate: when someone is a natural, what they really have are remarkable observational skills and the ability to apply them – in their case, through drawing (it could just as well have been espionage ;)). Drawing skills can be cultivated by anyone able to use their minds and hands. There are basically only two approaches to do this: theory (+practice) and observation (+studies).
:bulletred: Theory is a structured, organised approach, learning from someone more experienced who's laid it all out for us in a course, book or tutorial.
:bulletred: Observation is an organic, unpredictable approach, learning directly from the real world around us and gradually deriving principles from it.
Alone, they are both incomplete; trying to work with only one of them would be like trying to walk with one foot. Studying lays down a solid foundation, which remains abstract and limited until observation brings it to life with details and real-life application

Illustrative Journal Vol.1
Illustrative Journal Vol. 1
Ladies and gentlemen, after several years of art journals, offering advice, tutorials, tips and general information for those wishing to follow a career in the illustration field I have come to a point of being told countless times to turn these into news items, as to better help people here on DeviantART.  I have no idea how this will be viewed by the general populous of DA, but hopefully it will help somebody out there.  Which is what matters.
If during these, you have any questions on what I had to say (lets face it, most of these are written when I haven't slept), or if you wish to suggest an idea for future content, or even tell me that I suck at life me – don't hesitate.  I listen to all the feedback I'm given and there really isn't too dumb of a question.  It just gives me a reason to avoid work heh.
The point of this is that long ago, I had no guidance for many years as an aspiring illustrator

Tutorial and Features: Landscape Photography
LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY
Introduction
In the spirit of continuing to share insight and knowledge that I've learned from my experiences with photography, this will be my third tutorial on photographic subjects and techniques.  Previously I've submitted articles discussing digital camera noise (found HERE), and Neutral Density filters (found HERE).  I want to keep up with this, and hone it into a more helpful concept.  So this is the first one where I will try and provide a holistic coverage of a topic.  Today's topic is landscapes.

gilad
The most important factor of any landscape is focal range.  A landscape is characterized by a massive depth of field, that puts a vast and deep scene into sharp focus.  This is often overlooked by amateur photographers, who

dA setting, Patreon rising

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 11, 2017, 3:54 AM

I'm very much alive but it looks like I'm over deviantART. I'm not leaving as such, but I have no motivation to post work here anymore. I'm just getting too old for this site. The calligraphy art I am now fully focused on doesn't belong here.
If you're into that work, I would love to see more of you on Patreon and get some more artist engagement there. I post the finished pieces in public, so you can follow me there for free, although starting from $2 you get to see early sketches, thought processes, and other insights I just don't post anywhere else, among other perks.
I actually spent a whole day hanging out at Patreon headquarters this week, a beautiful space filled with beautiful bright people who genuinely want feedback and ideas, so it's more than just another platform to me now.

Otherwise, that work gets posted on Majnouna.com which now also has a blog for announcements.
Cedarseed.com is for what are now hobbies: my illustration, photography etc.
The recipes have their dedicated blog: Joumana's Cookbook.
Finally, for something completely different: For Love of the Earth.

See you around the webs!

PS: Did you know birds actually sing all night? I'm jetlagged AF and made this random discovery :|

"One of the fundamental conditions of happiness is to know that everything that one does has a meaning in eternity" - Titus Burckhardt

I trained in graphic design and my body of work encompasses illustration, comics, tutorials, digital games and children's books. I was apprenticed to a master calligrapher for several years and I am now settled in London, UK, where I am dedicated full-time to my own calligraphy, going deeper into the potential of the ancient art of the Kufic script, which I also teach, while pursuing illustration for my own pleasure. I'm also an avid cook and baker, and all-time animal lover, with a passion for ethnography and a history of globetrotting.

You'll find my work on my dual website, Majnouna (calligraphy) / Cedarseed (everything else). My CV is here.
