Grindelwald portrait by Maitia Grindelwald portrait by Maitia
Gellert Grindelwald
(1883-1998)
One of the most famous Dark Wizards of all time, surpassed only by Lord Voldemort, Grindelwald was known for his possession of the Elder Wand and his violent persecution of Muggles. During his reign of terror he held a large part of middle and eastern Europe in an iron grip which only ended with his defeat by Dumbledore in 1945.
He spent the remainder of his life imprisoned in his own prison, Nurmengard, and was killed in his cell by Voldemort after refusing to give up information as to the whereabouts of the Elder Wand.

I did this for :iconpastdervishandbanges:'s Wizard Card project. Therefore the quite long and informative text about my favourite wizard baddie. Watercolour and pencil.

Gellert Grindelwald is ŠJK Rowling and made of purest win!

Beautiful, beautiful traditional work. And thank you for not making him anime!hot. I know that's an odd thing to say, but ever since J.K.'s revelation about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, they've fallen prey to the 'all gay men are gorgeous' trope - however, you've made charismatic as well as humanly attractive. And you did it in watercolor, yee!

Thank you very much for the fave and the comment. I can only agree with you: you hardly ever see Grindelwald/Dumbledore art that isn't anime and sparkly. We need some stubble and things to make up for it. By the way: Did Jo ever say anything about Grindelwald being gay? Only I've always seen it as a sort of tragic, secret infatuation, but maybe that's just me?

It has not been Said that Grindelwald returned the affection, no, only baselessly assumed by millions :) I meant 'Dumbledore and Grindelwald' more to the effect of what you said: unrequited love, etc. It probably happened that someone smart like Grindelwald picked up on it and manipulated the hell out of him. The true psychopath cannot love. Poor Albus. Also, amen to the stubble.

Do, while you're on, check out what is hopefully the last manifestation of Black Family Portrait. My sister has an HP RP that's planning on using it as a plot point, of all things.

I completely agree with you! It seems very likely that Grindelwald, whether or not he was attracted to Dumbledore, would use it to play and manipulate him. Oh, this is great. The image of a desperately lovestruck Dumbledore and a manipulative and hot Grindelwald feeds my addiction to wizard angst and weltschmerz. Aaahhhhh. Must show braingasm with emote.....

There you go. Much better.

As to the Black Family Portrait, I like it very much. I think that it could do with more aggressive shadows and perhaps some more colours, especially on the skin. If you look closely, there are places where the skin is more reddish (eg. cheeks, tip of the nose, chin) and others where it's almost bluish or greenish (under the eyes, shadows, a little in the shadows around the mouth). This would add life to your characters' complexions. Other than that, I love what you've done to Andromeda's hair and Bella's expression. She just screams homicidal maniac.

This is great, I love the face! The way you drew the facial features is very nice, he looks engaging. And I really like how all the faces you draw look so solid. You are one of the few artists that make me actually realise how solid the faces they draw are.

Oh, and his hair is lovely. :meow:

Thank you very much. I always enjoy your sweet comments.
Although, after reading this one, this is what popped into my head:

"His face looks solid. Sooo he's a thickhead?"

My brain has far too many inner monologues. :dummy:
Anyway, cheers

You're very welcome! :)

Hahahaha, actually I meant that he looks very real. And, well, solid, I can't find any other way to express it. And no, not solid in the thickhead way. :P

YAY inner monologues are the best. Happen to me all the time. :la:

Thank you very much, that's so sweet of you.
I think my evil scanner ate most of the shadows and made it much more grainy, but on the whole I like it. Grindelwald really is my favourite villain.

Really cool. (I think he should have been described in the books as more powerful than Voldemort.)

Thank you.
Yeah, he certainly seems to have been more powerful than Voldemort. I mean, he had his own prison.
But then again, I'm not sure he was described as less powerful than Voldy. He was just less well known in Britain because he focused chiefly on eastern Europe and Germany.
That's what I think, anyway.

That's true, too. But I always thought the way he was described with an air of "the worst...only until Voldemort became powerful" was inaccurate. He seemed much more bad ass and affective. And he got it in the end, whereas Voldemort didn't. If you think about Voldemort, yes, he was affective, but he wasn't really...smart. How many times had Harry foiled him? And even at the end when he thought he finally killed Harry, he just kept chugging away without listening to what Harry had to say. I would have thought, "Hmm," if I knew I was out of Horcruxes and Harry just wouldn't die. :D

Yeah, you're right. If I was bent on world domination, had run out of horcruxes and my enemy STILL just wouldn't die, I'd probably think twice before trying to kill him, especially when he'd just told me what would happen if I did.
For an evil genius he was pretty stupid.
