Kiara by Magweno Kiara by Magweno
A quick pic of my good friend ~Emubomb's commission Kiara. A beautiful silver dragon with white armour that has blue etchings.

As with all my dolls Kiara is fully posable. I start with a wire armature held together with epoxy. I sculpt the head and feet from fimo, a polymer clay you can bake in the oven. Once cooled I wrap quilt batting around the armature, then measure and cut a pattern, usually from fur but in this case it was silver spandex. Any extras are glued on, like fur or feathers, but Kiara is special and Emma asked if I could make her armour.

The armour was a trial in itself but eventually I came up with what you see. It's a standard drinks can that has been airbrushed, varnished several times, had ink painted onto it then varnished some more.

If you're interested in a commission please send me an email at hello@magweno.com

Thanks for looking!

LOVE HER!!!! She is absolutely stunning, and the armor turned out so nicely. Excellent work, as always!

I didn't realize you had changed your name at first and was like "Who is this strange person in my devwatch folder?" LOL

Lol! I've been watermarking my pics as Magweno for a while now so I wasn't sure if people would get confused or not :D That's why I left my avatar with 'carn-dearg' on it, to make it a little easier x_X

You'd have to try quite hard to break her anyway. She's gonna fit in perfectly :D

Wow great job, I know it's even harder to get the batting down perfectly for a doll like this, as they say spendex reveals all! :XD: So cute!

I guess so! It's a little loose hence the wrinkles but she needs to be able to bend. The spandex is stretchy but I'm still worried about seams ripping considering I don't give myself much of a seam allowance

I'm sure your friend knows how to treat and bend your dolls ;) I think slightly loose is much better than lumpy, I sort of felt my dragon chests were lumpy with that satin-like scale material. Then again I use loose poly fill and wrap it down with yarn, great for building up muscles and form but not great for lumps ><

True, I don't bother to build up muscle form since fur usually hides EVERYTHING so well :o Plus I tear the batting down so small it's kinda easy to "sculpt" with anyway

Gorgeous design, and it's wonderful that it's an unusual fabric. Looks like you hit off the pattern quite nicely. Would you be able to take a few more pictures of this commission, maybe some other angles? The colors seem to lean on the blue side (am I the only one who gets that impression?) It looks like you put so much detail in the face! I'd love to see it closer. <3

Yes I will definitely have some more photos up later this week. This pic is heavily edited to make it more photo-y as I tend to stick to "colour-accurate" photos only and I think it detracts from the story the pieces tell. But yes I will have more detail specific and non-edited photos up :)

Haha, thanks for replying. :) I do like that you went all out on the photo, and spiffed it up. Thumbs for that.
I am glad to hear that there will be the usual photos as well.

That's kinda cool! I don't have the skill to sculpt something entirely from polymer clay, no way haha, especially not with wings like this :D

Must be, but, I think, at least, is easier to sew fabric with no fur, I think it is so difficult to sew that faux fur ><'
