Girl with Blue Butterflies

Inspired by Jan Vermeer, the Grant Wood's American Gothic and René Magritte
I wanted to re-create an old master with a modern twist.
It was fun to do, however, I had more problems with taking things out again than with finding things to put in... LOL There was a lot of texture work and actual painting involved with this one.

I hope the image speaks for itself, however, in case it doesn't - the blue butterflies are symbolic for all the dreams we have when we are young and the keys for all the choices and options that are open to us. I leave it up to you to decide the girl is thinking. :-)

Wow! I saw it and instantly thought of American Gothic. It would make a great cover for a DVD on a movie-- one of those ones where some girl is trapped in a dreamworld and has to find her way out (or try to).. maybe with butterflies being the trigger that puts her their (or gets her out in the end).

Anyway, thanks for using my stock! I'm glad the Blue Butterfly ( [link] ) found its way into such a well done piece.

Absolutely gorgeous. I love the bright colors of blue, by the butterflies and her eyes, against brown textures and background. Everything is just beautiful.:rose:

First off, I am crazy impressed at how many stocks you used to pull such a wonderful piece together - it's like internet collage!
And I love my little blue butterfly in her hair! She makes such a lovely decoration <3

Thank you so much for the lovely comment. I spend ages combining all the stocks into one image and blending them all together. I am glad it works. :-)

:wow: Wow! First of all, how did you keep track of all those stocks?? There are a ton! AimeeStock is a great model. I told her that her stock reminded me of the Dutch old masters, so it's cool that you saw it too, and chose her for a tribute to Vermeer (and the pose is totally American Gothic-esque). The keys are where I'm seeing the Magritte influence, is that what you intended?

This is such a lovely work. It's so detailed! I love the little bow in her hair, and the fact that you used different butterflies and keys instead of pasting the same ones over and over. The decoration on the door is just perfect. I think you made her eyes just the right amount of more blue, and they match the butterflies nicely.

Love love love this! The model/pose you used, the placement of the butterflies and keys hanging down, the aged wood behind her, the textures...all of it is so well put-together and I think you definitely succeeded in your "old master with a modern twist" intent.

Last, but not least, thank you so so much for the way you do your credits! Especially with that many stocks, a lot of people would just put links or (much worse) just usernames. It is very much appreciated
Thank you for using my stock :iconheartbumplz:

I name each layer/stock image with the name of the stock image and the provider and all my stock is in my faves or from sites I regularly use, so all I need to do afterwards is open up the pages and copy the name/link. There's a tutorial on how to make credits easy in my portfolio. I am a great believer in giving everyone their due and I couldn't do images like that without people here on DA and other places who offer their stock, for free no less. :-)

I've had great fun playing with the image and you got them all, although both the keys and butterflies are the 'Magritte' element. I think I might do more in this style as it's fun to work with and means I have to restrain myself a bit. LOL I know it doesn't seem like it, but I have images where I've used even more stock!

Thanks so much for allowing me to use your stock and the lovely comment. Means a lot! xo

I looked at your tutorial, very nice! That's a good method, I wish everyone would use it!

Ah, yes, I can see the butterflies being "Magritte" too. You should totally make more, this style is awesome! I'm such an art history nerd...I love all the references :D
