Bannockburn: The English by Magnus-Strindboem Bannockburn: The English by Magnus-Strindboem
The English had crossed the river Tweed, with King Edward leading, the High Constable, Hereford and Gloucester as his chief officers. A hundred of the greatest lords and barons with their levies had been assembled.

The next and probably last quality gate before the main picture, this was an experiment on fitting and positioning a lot of people into on scene. Additionally I added a couple of heraldic designs for the English side.

Now since :iconporrette: always guesses characters faster than I can render them, here is another question to solve:

Update to the question: This was a single render of about 10 hours and 2500 iterations. Sorry for the wild goose chase, but I was so astonished that everything fitted in, that I had to ask this ;)

-> Updated the picture, because I was not happy with the sharpness. This picture really changes depending on monitor and size, drives me nuts ;)

Long time ago, I actually did draw quite a bit. Just as well that render technology became available in time so nobody has to face those misdeeds :D

But honestly, it's great to hear that somebody likes the stuff coming out of my head. I think DA is just a cool place to get a look at other people's art. And you've got some pretty neat stuff going too, thinking of the work for Bloody Mess alone Dance!

My pleasure! Oh, not at all. I ment it as a compliment! I love this kind of atmosphere. It's very Shakespearean, I would say.

Tolle Athmosphere.

:happybounce: although every time I look at it I see more stuff to improve ;). Something that reallly bugs me is the sharpness / focus gradient. Did you ever experiment with the Lens parameters?

no i didn't. Because i consider Daz as not a fully Professional 3d software. So, if found issues or something which i don't understand, i manually fix them by PShop.

So do I, even though I knew the events quite well, I still learned a lot of stuff during the research for the pictures, and even something as dull as a heraldry roll can become a stunning tale in itself if you got a certain background to draw on.

I think I've fainted.

The sky was something of a accidental discovery. I tuned one of the camera-raw filters (I'm not sure how it's called in English, de-fog or something) and it turned the sky from so-so cloudy into this dramatic version.

I had to mask the filter to the sky only because it did not look well on the characters, and as Sukkram pointed out, the birds became a bit more prominent, but it really added to the mood.

Outstanding work!  The detail and atmosphere are really great.

8 render sections: BG far left, 2 center BG crowds behind main rider group, BG far right, Front Lead rider group, Mid Rider and cart group, Foreground Grass, BG horizon and sky.

Thank you for guessing! Actually I set up 5 groups (Bohun, de Clare, Royal  = blue, yellow, red plus two groups left and rear in the back).

But sorry, I  send you on a wild goose chase, it was only a single render of about 10 hours. I think I've fainted.

You have to excuse me, I actually expected to use several renders (was the point of the picture) but to my own astonishment I managed to fit everything in quite well.

As :iconemarukk: noted, that's really a strong point of Genesis2 and a reason to keep them: There are around 20 real characters including horses, not counting instances and prop-soldiers.

Wonderful job!

Regarding the number of renders, I find it difficult to answer :) Probably at least two - a group in the foreground (on the road) and a more blurred group(s) in the background.

It is not very clear what Gen2 highlights. Maybe you think that it is less costly to render than Gen1, 3 or 8? But it is not. Gen2 is the most "polygonistic" figure among the rest.

Well I can only go by experience and I can fit a lot more Genesis2 figures in a picture than Genesis3 or 8. The ratio I experienced was 3 Gen8 = 7 Gen3 = 20 Gen2. But that's only in regards of texture memory.

Ah, got it. Just the default shader installed on Gen2, for 3Delight. It is only 19 textures against ~30-35 textures in Gen3/8. You can achieve the same (or even better) effect on Gen1,3,8 by removing all the textures with unnecessary detailing for the background characters (Normal/Bump/Dual Lobe/Displacement/...) and leaving only the basic diffuse textures.
Also, textures for background characters can be quite (and even necessary) reduced to 512x512. This will reduce their volume by about 12 times without sacrificing quality.

Very good information, I will do some checks on this in the next step, especially since I could avoid fitting Gen3 outfit on Gen2.

Don't worry. And I rechecked the polys and maps. You were right of course concerning the differences between G2-G3-G8.

BTW, do you have any insights, how large the impact of the Sub-D levels is? It seems to cut into the memory usage strongly, even though the maps stay the same.

Clap
