49th: Polyphemus by MaestroTomberi 49th: Polyphemus by MaestroTomberi
I wanted to recreate (and I also wanted to do so from a long time ago) one of the most famous passages of
Homer's Odyssey: When the gigantic Polyphemus gets uber drunk with the wine chauld Odysseus prepared him (specially strong wine, btw ) just before he gets so blind that Ulyses takes the chance to stab his eye with a pole and leave him blind permanently, and thus both him, his men and their sheeps herd escape safely.

This time I wanted to keep a; what I consider unusual for me, completely natural appearance of the elements put in scene, given the tremendous respect I have towards the classicvs, all of it mix of paint and photomanipulation.

Photographic resources taken from [link]

I hope everyone enjoys it :).

This is pretty cool, love the cyclops :D My problem with the manip is how the light sources don't match up - like the light on the goat in comparison to the cyclops. Also, the lamb totally has a different feel to the rest of the image. It doesn't blend, it just kinda sits on top of it.. it has a different quality. But overall, nice work!

The lamb is the most important part of the image, if you have ever read the Oddysey, altough it's well true that it could look slightly darker.

Indeed I have. But in the image it doesn't suit. Different quality to the rest of the image. That's all I'm saying :)

great work! i loved the odyssey and this was a pleasant reminder.

just one question: wasn't polyphemus, as you stated earlier, gigantic?
I don't recall that the sheep were gigantic as well, so i was a little confused there :/

Thanks a lot for the kind response.

To tell the truth, yes, the cyclops really is gigantic. otice here also the stances of both characters: while the shep lies down, Polyphemus stands crouched. Making an approximation he should measure up to 3/ 3,5 metres, making him out to be a real giant, altough without any stridences :).

What a great use of stock, paint, and creativity. :-)

*jealous*

I think the crispiness of the stock somewhat clashes with the smooth blurriness of the painting...a little...but it still works.

Very impressive!

It's always cool to see photomanipulators who actually illustrates something instead of just making a picture.

I like the concept.
