AtsusaCon Poster Illustration by MadModesty AtsusaCon Poster Illustration by MadModesty
This is the illustration I made for the poster for the upcoming edition of AtsusaCon in Antwerp: [link]

The mascottes are also designed by me and the rights are mine. (the organization of atsusacon is allowed to use this image for poster purposes in 2012 only)
So no one but them gets to use this!

;o; thanks.
they wanted a more realistic approach, but it got dissed HORRIBLY at their FB page =(
allusions on the brush, general 'NOT ANIMU NUFF!" and "couldn't you find anyone more skilled" (auch), 'they look creepy and dead' etc etc.

:( I don't think it was right for them to be insulting you. I think you should just keep in mind that if the con let you do their flyer, then obviously they must like your work and really the client matters the most. :) Would you like if I gave some critiques on a few things or red-lined? Some people here already offered some advice so I'm not sure if you're still open for it or not.

OHJEEZ I'm so sorry how long it's taken me to do it! I've been so busy lately and your reply got buried under my messages aaaa. ;;;;;

I only had time to do the girl since I'm swamped with other work, but instead of redlining, I refilled in the bits I thought might be changed. (Keep in mind though that it's still pretty messy, and stylistically my stuff is different than yours and might not be what you're going for)

Here's the gif comparison: [link]

Close up of the upper body: [link]
-I rounded out her face and jawline, and lowered her right (our right) eye and mouth a bit, since her head is tilting slightly.
-Changed some of the shading on the face as well as around her shoulders.
-Increased the contrast below her jaw so her face would stand out more.
-Made her eyes rounder/more open, and raised her eyebrows a bit to make her look 'happier'.
-The fabric on the right sleeve seemed to be pulling diagonally to the right instead of downward with gravity. There was also a gap in the left sleeve that I thought should be filled in.
-I made her hair fuller, but this really wasn't a problem; I just like drawing huge hair hahaha. cx

And the lower body: [link]
-I 'pushed back' some areas of the obi so her waist is a bit more 3D.
-The more obvious change is the re-positioning of her leg and the way the fabric draped over it. The original looked a little like the body was facing us, but the leg was going profile. I think the top of her stocking gave this illusion, since it's going almost straight across instead of curving with her thigh. I made the perspective more dramatic, but it might not have been necessary if the stocking was changed.
-A smaller thing, but I introduced a bit of the blue from the boy's outfit into the girl's. (low opacity for some of the darker shaded areas) Stuff together will reflect colours off of eachother (of course depending on the materials and lighting), and can make things look more 'unified'.

Hope that helps! :)

From what I've seen about half the dissing on the facebook page is about the typography, or can be traced back to that ;)

I do agree that the characters look a bit stiff and indeed the girl's hips/legs are a bit off, but that's about it.

Loving the colours!

I think a reason for the dissing would be that the characters look a bit stiff. The girl's hips and the leg (mainly the joint between the hip and the leg) are anatomically incorrect. It also looks like the paintbrush could fall right out of the boy's hands, he doesn't have enough grip on it. Both his hands are fully at the front, but there's nothing at the back or underneath the brush to support it.
I love the background though, and the colouring is perfect! <3

See you at Atsusacon! ^^
