Metatron, King of the Angels by MadHatter-Himself Metatron, King of the Angels by MadHatter-Himself
Here is the first picture in a series of pictures I am going to be making together with :icontora-panthera: who came up with the idea.
We are together going to be researching and then drawing various angels and demons from Judaism, Christianity & Islam.
All the characters will be uploaded on lone pictures in their full size, but also in a smaller version where all the characters appear together with name-tags underneath them.

The project is being drawn in a very specific drawing-style, the drawing-style of the MMO Dragonica [link] so that if people out there wish to make their own versions of characters from mythology that fits together with ours, people have the ability to do so, since the drawing-style is very simple but professional-looking.

Part of this project is to reinvent religious figures and visualize them in a new way, while still keeping them true to their religious roots.
For this reason, their will follow a deep explanation along with every picture, explaining what has been done and why specific choices of design has been made.
At the very bottom of the description, there will then be a category called [PERSONAL INTERPRETATION] which is going to be the artist's own connections between various religious figures and moments, and how they affected the overall design-choice of the character in question.

Metatron is the angel closest to God himself in Judaism and in-officially in Christianity and Islam.

Metatron is Enoch, an ancestor of Noah, taken by God and turned into an angel.
"And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him"
- Genesis 5:22-29

Metatron serves God as a Celestial Scribe.

He is the archangel and therefore leader of the highest level of the Sephirot, the Keter which represents the Above-consciousness state called Crown which is impossible for the human mind to comprehend.

Since Metatron is the archangel of the Keter, he commands the angel choir called the Chayot Ha Kodesh, which is a realm of angels known as the "Living Creatures."
The "Living Creatures" has been described by Ezekiel as having the shape of a man, with four faces:
that of Man, a Lion, an Ox and Eagle, and with four wings;
"They glowed like burning coals, had calf's feet that sparkled like brass, and traveled like lightning."
- Ezekiel Ch. 01
In a later appearance, their faces are those of a Man, Lion, Eagle and a Cherub.
- Ezekiel Ch. 10
Many Christians believe that the Chayot Ha Kodesh is symbolizing the four Evangelists of Christianity: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
For this and a few other reasons, some people believe that Metatron is not only an archangel, but the Holy Ghost of Christianity itself.

Another reason for the "Holy Ghost"-theory is a speech made by God himself upon Metatron's creation:
"Pay attention to him and listen to what he says.
Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him."
- Exodus 23:211

"This Enoch, whose flesh was turned to flame, his veins to fire, his eye-lashes of lightning, his eyeballs to flaming torches, and whom God placed on a throne next to the throne of glory, received after this heavenly transformation the name Metatron"
- The Third Book of Enoch

Metatron is believed to have 36 wings, 3 of them are supposed to represent the Christian Trinity of the Father, Son & Holy Ghost.

Metatron's Cube is an image-representation of the "Fruit of Life" which is supposed to contain all information about the universe, and therefore God himself.
This fruit is supposed to be the reason behind the banishment of Adam and Eve.

It is unknown what the origin of Metatron's name is.
There are however a few guesses on what his name's inspiration might have been:
"Mattara" which means: "keeper of the watch"
"MMTR" which translates into "to guard / to protect"
"Mitator-a" which is the name of a Roman-Army forrunner.

Metatron is one of my personal favorite religious figures, which is logically why I started with him.
But the reason for him being so interesting to me, is how little is known about him, and all that is know about him is up for debate, so his existence is perfect for this sort of project, I am basically free to go nuts and search for connections everywhere in the ancient texts.
So here is what I came up with.

First of all, on analyzing the entire premise of Metatron, I personally already stumble upon a BIG problem:
"Metatron is the human Enoch taken by God and turned into an angel"
This is in itself not really weird since Enoch was said to "walk with God" however, the problem with is that Metatron was supposed to have existed since long before the birth of the first humans, Adam and Eve, proof of this is in the Fruit of Life, which was made by Metatron, some rabbis even go as far as to saying that Metatron made Eve take the Fruit of Life from the Tree so that humanity could evolve into beings of Wisdom
(which some rabbis believe is the greatest priority of Metatron)

So, with this cleared out, the problem is pretty clear, Enoch couldn't possibly be Metatron, since he wasn't in existence at that moment.

But fear not!
Just because Enoch couldn't have been Metatron, it doesn't stop someone else from having been Metatron before him, and supporting this theory is the fact that it in the ancient texts there appears to exist to Metatrons, one with his name spelled with six letters: (מטטרון)
and one spelled with seven letters: (מיטטרון)

From this two questions appear:
"If there existed two Metatrons, and Enoch was the second, then who was the first?"
And the second question:
"If there was two Metatrons, then why did one stop being Metatron and afterwards let Enoch take over?"

Both questions can be answered by making one specific angel Metatron, and that angel is Lucifer, the fallen angel.

Lucifer being the first Metatron explains a lot about both Metatron's and Lucifer's origins.
Most scholars doesn't believe that angels has Free Will, since Free Will is what is supposed to have made humanity so special and closer in resemblance to God then the angels.
However, it is stated that Lucifer had Free Will and he therefore didn't bow down before humanity upon there creation, which in turn was the reason for him turning into a fallen angel.
If Lucifer was Metatron, it would explain why he had Free Will, simply because he in that case would have been one with God, this would especially be true if one believed in Metatron being the Holy Ghost.

Metatron and Lucifer being the same angel also explains the before-mentioned theory of Metatron making Eve take the Fruit of Life, which is as everyone should know, one of Lucifer's best known deeds.

To support this theory more, we'll need to get a little bit technical, the Angelic Hierarchy, known as the Sephirot or Sephirah [link] is made from 10 groups of different kinds of angels, all these groups has an archangel as their leader, and as stated before, Metatron was the leader of the highest rank of angels, Chayot Ha Kodesh.
The problem here is the idea many people have that Lucifer used to be an archangel before he became a fallen angel, but that could not be possible since no group is free for him to command.....
Unless of course that he himself used to be one of those archangels mentioned, and which archangel wasn't around until Enoch became one?

The last point I'll make to support my theory is in the reasons for Lucifer's fall.
Lucifer's best known reason for becoming a fallen angel is not bowing to humanity upon their creation.
Another reason for him becoming a fallen angel was simply because he was planing to overthrow God and become God himself.
The last and most important reason was that he was disagreeing with God about the salvation of humanity.
This last reason then begs the question:
"What did Lucifer want salvation to be?"
The answer is simple if we believe that Metatron and Lucifer is one and the same, Wisdom.

Now then, now I would like to make the argument that Metatron is the identity of another important religious figure, however, this one is simpler to argue since the figure itself has never been identified by anything other then the horse it was riding on...
The White Horse of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals.
Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, "Come and see!"
I looked, and there before me was a white horse!
Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
- Revelation 6:1-2

The Horsemen-King of the White Horse is represents Conquest or Victory and is also believed to represent the Holy Ghost because of the Crown.
The horse itself is believed to represents the Anti-Christ and those two together are believed to overall represent the victory of Christianity over false prophets.

Here the connection between Metatron and the White Horsemen-King is very clear because of my previous argument about Metatron being the Holy Ghost of Christianity.

With all this cleared up, I should be able to explain my design choices very simply.
Metatron is drawn on as a man with burning skin and lightning for eyes because of the Third Book of Enoch's description of him.
Metatron has a crown both because of his status as the Archangel of Keter which represented Crown, and also because of his status as the White-Horsemen-King of the Apocalypse, for this same reason, he is equipped with a bow and sitting on a white horse.
The white horse has a red mane because of its status as the Anti-Christ, which again is a reference to Satan/Lucifer who is believed to have red hair.

Metatron's crown is designed as a "Feathered War Bonnet" because of Metatron sometimes being depicted as having 36 wings, Metatron's bow has been designed as wings for this same reason.

Metatron has 6 wings in this picture because of Lucifer being a Seraphim-angel before he became a Fallen angel.

Lastly, Metatron has horns on his crown as a reference to Lucifer which in turn is known as a possible version of the Devil.

this loos really cool :D love the details (I feel your pain on wings, they are annoying X_X)  oh and the info, very interesting theory on Metatron and Lucifer being one and the same. I never considered that (then again I don't read the bible a whole lot) but it does make more sense, Lucifer is said to be one of the most beautiful beings ever while Satan 9/10 times is...well not portrayed as such XD so that makes me wonder if they really are meant to be one and the same why make him look hideous when he's meant to be pretty?  But then again the bad guys usually aren't shown being beautiful (less they're female but that's another topic)

I am loving this interpretation of the angel! The headdress, wings, and colours remind me of some Hindu or Southeast Asian deity, specifically, Garuda.

I can see where you are coming from with Garuda, I didn't think of that when I made it, but I do get ya, pretty nice "catch" if you can call it that.

The headdress is mostly meant to help visualize the idea of Metatron having about 36 wings; since that wouldn't be possible without making a stupid-looking image, I decided to make other things on his design Wing-based, which ended out being the headdress and the bow.

Ah, that's a good compromise.

I love the wings, the feathers, the horse's hair. I also love the armor and the bow. Very awesome work. ;););)

Funny about the wings, since drawings is something I hate with a passion, I personally really think it is boring, so I drew them as simply as possible, but I think the colouring made them work pretty well.
