INT. GREAT HALL – DAY The Great Hall hums with tension. Diplomats and politicians gather in clusters, waiting for the Tournament to begin. The Umgadi stand guard at each exit. Tall, rigid, silent. Star Trek

My father wasn't omniscient, he slipped his vhs tapes into the VCR with every episode of Star Trek that aired, stacked them in rows beside the analog tv for when we'd need them in the future. He wasn't omnipotent - couldn't make himself move any faster to catch every show as he'd planned - and so, the tail end of Enterprise's voyage would sweep our screen every now and then. He wasn't omnipresent like his cigar smoke, but hopeful in his choice of shows. Not enough to stave the impulse to preserve, knowing the star-date's database ensured a record of our culture, but enough to store them on devices that sat side by side with his hope, his image as we would remember him, as if he knew, as if he knew.

One Little Spark - Part 2 - Prologue

ENGLAND, 1893. In the dead of a wet and roaring night, a night that most often appears in one’s nightmares, the farmlands and forests of southeast England howl out for mercy only to be out-voiced by the high rushing winds. For many of the farmers, especially with the Great Depression going on in England, rain has been considered a Godsend. But it’s taken a far heavy turn with all of this wind blowing almost everything in sight. Crops and seeds were flying off of their soil, trees and underbrush had been overturned, blocking roads and destroying homes of both people and many woodland creatures. The livestock in numerous farms cried out in fear by the sounds of banging doors, cold rain pouring in followed by thunder and lightning, and the cold bitter winds barging in, which many groups like sheep and cattle have huddled together to keep warm. Even just stepping outside to use “the John’s” in an outdoor privy shack or into the wild and green was out of the question!

PD Showcase: Buck Rogers

Here's another Showcase of a character that got big in 1929. One that was rather popular in it's day before getting overshadowed by series such as Flash Gordon, Star Wars and even the parody version of him in the form of Duck Dodgers. But hopefully with Buck getting some more attention he could end up regaining some of the spotlight if only among indie creators. This is Buck Rogers in the 25th Century A.D.. Anthony "Buck" Rogers was a 29 year old engineer for the American Radioactive Gas Corporation and WWI veteran who served in the Army Air Corps. While on the job, Rogers fell into a coma from a strange gas leak, which put him in a state of suspended animation for centuries until he awoke in the 25th century. He meets Wilma Deering and the intrepid Dr. Huer. Together with his new friends, he aids them in their struggles to rid the world of the Han. So here's one of a pair of Showcases about two famous characters who have been recently discovered to be in the Public Domain. And as you can see in the title, this Showcase will be about Dick Tracy. Dick Tracy is a fictional police detective in the American comic strip Dick Tracy created by Chester Gould in 1931. Tracy is a tough and intelligent detective who uses forensic science, advanced gadgetry, and wits in his relentless pursuit of criminals. Now, the reason why Tracey is PD is that the copyright to Dick Tracy's first appearance in the October 4, 1931 comic strip was not renewed 28 years later in 1958 or 1959. Fawcett court case, some of the Superman comic strips were revealed to either not have a copyright or have an improperly placed copyright (just saying "Copyright 1939" instead of giving the name of the copyright holder; you had to do that in those days), resulting in those strips becoming public domain.
