The Farmer
The farmer of the bone yard,
tending to his seeds
Caring to his bones with love
according to their needs
This farmer stands unassuming
he could be anyone
though his face is pale and tanned
skin nurtured by the setting sun.
His crops stand firm
straight and tall in rows.
Quietly bleaching in the sun
unaffected by the wind that blows.
In his boneyard there are flowers
though they are laid in grief.
He wears his suit of black and white
and to see him is belief.

Break Apart Your Voice
Break apart your voice
to find out what's inside.
See the way you think things
and where your troubles hide
Break apart your voice
and what beneath, lies.
Will you find gold and treasure?
Or find the source of your flies?
Break apart your voice
then sing a different song.
One of your own that you
have known, all along.
Break apart your voice.
Find out who you are.
Don't take yourself for granted.
It will not scar

Fields
We begin as fallow fields.
Reckless and untamed.
then we are plucked for pastures.
Comb'ed and named.
Then we are broken down
as they tell us, "For the soil."
As we gaze at fields
left to spoil.
Then we are planted
in nice, neat rows.
To absorb the sun and rain
and monitor how we grow.
When we are strong and dependent
we are passed to hands we don't know
Hands with no care or tenderness
Like the talons of a crow.
And we are told to trust their hands.
That we will be rewarded at the end of the season.
So we grow them our best fruit.
They put a sticker on them saying "Gardens of Eden"
Then comes the reward.
And we are proud in our rows.
But all that happens is we lay fallow again
as our reward is being ploughed.

Wild Horses
You have wild horses in your veins
beating and palpitating through
the wheat fields of your body
till fingers chill and lips turn blue.
There is never rest for your horses
so there is not for you
and that would be your torture
until the day you flew.
And the flying, oh!
That's what you're alive for.
Not to stay, forever, a field of wheat
to always have your feet on the floor.
But your horses, where are they?
They have left so that you might fly.
Who knew your horses held you back.
Think not, twice! And take to the sky!

Secret Smiles
Secret smiles stolen between lovers
on dark lanes in the thick of December
while summer still lingers in their hearts.
Nothing will stop as long as they remember
that just before the dawn breaks
the moon kisses her children goodbye.
There is life in this old city
with it's lights and songs, high.

An Old Crow Soul
An old crow soul
alights upon a tree.
The old soul skulks there
for anyone to see
And so the people gather
to see the old soul sit.
And the people take his feathers
for their own, bit by bit
The crow never squawked
or made a move to harm.
Except to, now, shiver
from his newly naked arms.
But we have the soul in part
and can claim it for our own
So we may put it behind glass
while saying, "Bless This Home"

The Stars We Find Ourselves
Stars can be found anywhere
with strength enough to see them.
The lights of a city; the shine in an eye
It also takes strength to be one.
Shining, deadly and distant.
The stars in the skies
will one day, swallow the world
Like the stars in your eyes.
There is magic in the stars
that you find for yourself
Be it, the city lights
or the forest elf.
Although, we are losing
our night skies.
There is always a star to be found
in true love's eye.

Towers
We build our towers tall and high
so that we may push against the sky.
Like it was an envelope that needed a shove
so we may look at all the people from above.
But the view from the top of that tower
is a view from the seat of power.
There is an elevator to those dizzying heights
even birds go not that high in flight.
It is a mountain that made has made.
At the peak, you may buy a poster that will fade
like the memories of rising to such power,
and see what is so great at the top of the tower.
There are views of the country, that don't need
a twenty story climb or underlings to see.
You push so hard against it, but never see the night sky
but you city people, who build your towers high.
Tell me about the tough climb to the top.
And I will tell you what you have not.
You have not seen a pristine sunset or the stars.
But please, keep talking about all your precious tar.

Symbols
There are symbolic meanings
to everything you do.
As life passes through art,
you live that symbol too.
Not just in great works
and not just in great words.
Tell, do you know why your heart swells
to see a flight of birds?
Because life is carried through on symbols
what gives meaning to a kiss
is the closed eyed vulnerability.
Same goes for clasped hand wishes.
Life is never as straight as you would think.
There are symbols all around us.
From an obvious flag
to a cast down glance, thus.

The Velvet Voiced Fool
We trusted the velvet voiced fool
and were surprised when he led us astray.
But, oh, how he talked. But, oh, how he sang.
We thought he could keep the darkness at bay.
Then we crowned the velvet fool.
And he stood atop us, like a jester king.
But we still thought he could heal.
We still believed everything.
All that changed when we decided "No. Not here"
His velvet voice turned to sand
and harshly said, "Prostrate yourself.
Before me, do not stand"
And the scales fell all at once.
His medals were tin bottle tops
and voice was a machine
and his scepter was a prop.
Do not trust the fool with the velvet voice.
And, especially, do not kneel
His hands are carved of pain.
His kingly touch will not heal.

Pluck the Petals
You pluck petals from the plant
and it may live or die.
But it matters not, as
you have the petals.
Sure, the plant may wither
if you pick its leaves
But that's okay because
the leaves are yours now.
And if you yank it from the ground
the plant will surely die.
But you need the space for other things
like something hewn from stone.
Someday, you'll level this place
of all it's pastoral grace
and where it stood, put a Wal-Mart
like the marker of a grave.

To You
To all the yous there are,
I sing you this gentle breeze.
To all the yous that could be
that you float through with ease
All the yous that make you up
to all the yous you abandoned.
The you that takes up passion
to the ones that make you saddened.
To all the yous, past and present!
The yous that are with rapture, alive.
The yous that you seek in the mud
that, to grow up, took the final dive.
It is a shame to seek yourself in one lens
no matter what that may be.
Be well-rounded and curious
about everything you see.

Existence is Loud
Existence is so loud.
It is not the soft wind of being alive
It's loud and raucause
where all voices collide.
You try to steal away in the night
to somewhere where existence
can be quiet for a while.
But you're followed by cars and lights.
Even the night sky, from deep within your bed
hums, softly. Perhaps it is the moon
singing you to sleep
from inside your mind.
And then dreams have their own soundtrack
whether pleasant, nightmare or banal
Loud sounds. Soft sounds. Sounds.
It eventually turns to static.
Existence is a noise-capade
all combating for your ears.
Inside and from out.
Year after day.

Light Pollution
Tell me more about the moon.
Teach me about the stars
Why do we wish on them
when they are so far?
The stars are made of crystal
and the moon is made of glass.
And they may grant your wishes
if you humble yourself to ask.
There is a great something
and a great nothing out there.
But finding a place to see this majesty
has become increasingly rare.
As city swallows country,
we cannot see past the street lights
and the stars go missing as the moon grows pale
and we may never again see the black of night.
So, dream of the stars and moon.
For it may be the only chance you can see.
And in this impermanent world,
something permanent is rare to be.

At the Altar of Beauty
It seems we all prostrate ourselves
at the altar of beauty.
And to me, it seems a strange thing
what we lay there, it is our duty.
But what we lay there is so precious
our minds and souls and hearts
just to become what we think is beautiful.
Perhaps, we want to become, ourselves, art.
But then, is it worth it?
The pain, the tears, the agony?
Just to spend this brief stretch of life
as something attractive to see?
Would it not be better not to think,
"I have been put here to be pretty"
Better to create beauty out of nothing
Not the stars in your eyes, but write the lights of the city.
So, stand at the altar of beauty
and imagine something more wonderful.
Than simple human attractiveness, for it is cheap.
Why not create something lovely and colourful?

Sisyphus
Your spirit bends to break
the sweat upon your brow.
Rise to the occasion or fall
It's the only two ways, now.
But still you do not quit.
A task for the Sisyphuses in the world
and not for the complacent
but for one to follow the path, unfurled.
The challenge was not at your destination
but all the little things you finished, bit by bit
But now you can sit back, Sisyphus.
Your mountain, and your boulder at the top of it
