Prologue A sudden sound of crashing leaves and limbs break the night silence. Panting and rustling follows, a fleeing figure is seen in silhouette by the light of the stars and moon. How many countless miles have they been chased? Are they still being perused? Why is there nowhere to hide? These thoughts filled the fugitives mind as they continue their mad dash through the wilderness. They suddenly stumbled and lay face down in the grass. It wasn’t long that they laid there when the sounds of horses and dogs could be heard in the distance, along with the voices of many men. He scanned her face for a moment; he then examined the makeshift cloak she was wearing. “Looks like I got myself a keeper.” As he said this, his voice lightened in tone. A cold wind slowly slithers over the nearly barren plains. The ground is hard, baked to cracking point by the daytime sun. It was night now, and the temperature had dropped drastically from the high 90s to the low 40s (in Fahrenheit). All along the open plains in between the distant rocky hills lay a scattering of small tough shrubs, some resilient grasses, and a few tall cacti. Here and there were a few large rocks and stones. Among some of the piles of stones were snakes and lizards curled up their holes for the night.
