Edit March 13th 2012: IridescentStardust is the new and current Digital Dolls CV.  She may spend her time moving miscategorized deviations or she may not.  If she does, she has my permission to use this as a resource to help people understand why their deviation was moved.  However since I have no idea what she is moving, if you are referred here, please do not ask me why your deviation was moved since I a) will have no clue which deviation it is b) have no clue who you are and c) have no answer because of a or b.  Any questions about moved deviations should go to Moonbeam13.  Sorry for the inconvenience ^^;.  The article also has a few updates =)

Hello, I am Lyricanna, your former CV for Digital Dolls.  I have recently noticed a few common types of miscats within the category and have decided to write this article in the hopes of explaining why certain things are miscats and where they belong here on dA.

I ask you to please :+favlove: this article to help promote the proper categorization of digital dolls =)

What Belongs in Digital Dolls
:bulletblue: Bases (which are naked templates of humanoid figures created via digital media that have a hard pixel outline) that are created for other members of dA and the dolling community to create digital dolls.  These can be edited to some degree, but every base maker has different rules, so please read them carefully and respect them.

:bulletblue: Completed dolls which are made using a base either created by another person or by the doller themself.  These are completed using digital programs to draw on hair and clothes.  Backgrounds and props may or may not be present.  They have a hard pixel outline.

What does NOT belong in Digital Dolls
:bulletred: Every traced image on dA.  The traced base category exists for bases that have been created via tracing another image, but they have to conform to what a base is; a naked human template.  Dolls made on traced bases also belong in this category.  Traces of Pokemon, Digimon, Sonic and so on belong in Fanart>Digital art since these traces are not up to be edited.

:bulletred: Stamp templates or completed stamps.  These do not contribute to the making of digital dolls in the least, and belong in either Resources and Stock Images or in deviantART Related >Stamps.

:bulletred: Pixel art of animals or objects.  These belong in Digital Art>Pixel Art>Characters and Digital Art>Pixel Art>Objects, respectively.

:bulletred: The end result from drag and drop doll makers such as Lunaii, Doll Divine, Candybar, Tek Tek.org, etc.  If you have to post these (or are even allowed to; read the doll makers' rules first) they belong in Scraps since you did not contribute to them in any artistic way.

:bulletred: Kiriban screenshots; these also belong in Scraps.

:bulletred: Line art that do not meet base requirements (ie have hair and clothes drawn in).  These belong in Resources and Stock Images>Line Art and Character Sheets.

:bulletred: Any digital art that does not meet the above mentioned basic descriptions of Digital Dolls or Doll Bases.  Fractals, vexels, abstract art, etc all belong in various categories of Digital Art.

:bulletred: Photos of physical dolls (plushies, ball-jointed-dolls, etc).

:bulletred: Adoptables.  They belong either in deviantART related>Deviant Stamps or in deviantART related> devious fun > adoptables.

:bulletred: IMVU Avatars and Flele shells.  To be honest, no idea where the Flele shells belong, but I know that IMVU avatars (if you have to submit them) belong in scraps.

:bulletred: Shimejis aka desktop buddies.  I'd assume that a better place for these than dolls would be Customization > Skins and Themes > Windows Utilities > Applications > Miscellaneous.

:bulletred: Animated .gifs.  While I do realise that not every category allows .gif submissions, there are ways around this that are covered by FAQ #39: I just tried to submit a file to X Category, but it told me the filetype I am trying to upload is not allowed. What can I do?  If you are not sure where to submit something, please see FAQ #78: Where do I submit to if I'm not sure?

What Do I Do When I See a Miscat?
You can either politely tell the person who submitted it in a private note that it would be better suited to another category and explain why, politely (which doesn't always go well, as a warning).  Or you can report it and explain in the report why it is a miscat.

Please do not contact CVs and demand that they move them; this is not a mandatory part of our work as volunteers!

That is all I can think of for the moment on what does and does not fit this category.  If anyone has anything they would like to see added, please let me know and I would be happy to edit the article =)

Thank you for reading!  Please help promote organization on dA =)

My art was moved from Digital Dolls to Scraps, can I move it to another category other than Digital Dolls or will I get banned for moving it?

Any questions about moved deviations go to $Moonbeam13, as per the first paragraph of this news article. Also, I did not move your deviations; the person who did is suggesting that you read this to find out why.

I really wish people would stop with the flaming/hate regarding bases and dolls. I keep getting lots of it from people accusing me of "recolors" when recolors are CLEARLY different from base dolling. I've tried explaining it and still they won't understand. -_-;

When using a traced base, often people see no difference. But I am really not here to argue the copyright thing, which is the heart of the issue ^^;

Do you know of a way to move multiple deviations in your (my) gallery to other categories, without having to go to each one and change it?
I'm switching a lot of them now, this really really helped ^^ And I was just wondering if there was a faster way.

This is really helpful, thank you for writing it!

I've got a question though: What's the difference between digital art>pixel art>characters>non-isometric and the customization>digital dolls>pixel art gallery? I recently saw several deviations that I believe should be in the digital dolls gallery, but I don't know how to explain it to the person...

Use of a base, generally speaking. Although this is murky ground, generally use of a base = doll, and just sprite characters or random people done pixel by pixel would go into pixel art. But some baseless dolls are technically okay in both categories, which is where it gets confusing and it becomes the artist's decision of what they wanted their art to be. I hope that helps a bit =)

and just like that I love you. :D

The miscats get so annoying. It's like...seriously, if you're going to be a doll/base artist you should at least read the category descriptions. =___=

Yeah, but all categories have their miscat issues; the amount of fanart that ends up in Anime/Manga is ridiculous XD
