Ysabell pushed herself into a sitting position. Her hair was full of sand and her face was full of pyramid dust. Some of her hair frizzled at the tips. She stared listlessly at him.

Actually, I was mimicking what (odds are) Gorey was mimicking...a Newgate etching, probably almost 100 years before his time. They were a sort of tabloid crime news service...veracity was optional, but blood was compulsory.
