Chaotica 0.48 for Windows

This release is mainly a bugfix release for the 0.47 beta, with many improvements to the user interface fixing issues such as the fractal not scaling when you changed resolution, imaging settings being spuriously reset and not saved properly etc. Hopefully it's a bit more friendly to use now :) It'll still crash if you try to restore state without having the original params loaded, that'll be fixed in the next release.

Another important change in this build is restored native support for bipolar, thanks to code Xyrus-02 provided from Apo7X15C beta 3. I'm hoping the small difference in handling the divide by zero and negative log etc will finally enable full compatibility - please test this and report if something looks wrong!

It seems I have a bit of a problem here... I'm using Apophysis 7x, and apparently linear 3d is not supported (?). Also, when I load the fractal, I get an error in the msdos console "Warning: Error resetting variable flower_petal". I checked the list of xform variables, there is no such one used in my flame o_O. If you'd like, I can send you a *.flame file.

in the newest apo7x 15c, the message about linear3d does not appear, but the flower petal error does.. and it crashes Chaotica.

the flower dll is also not needed in chaotica because it's built-in. nevertheless, i should add it to the plugin dll blacklist.

Chaotica cannot load the flower plugin at all. Even if it is not used in your fractal, you ALSO need to take it completely out of your chaotica plugins folder.

thank you :) it was actually in 0.47 already, but somehow a lot of people missed it... anyway, a lot of people said nice things about it, and apophysis tried to copy it so that's a sincere compliment too :giggle:

i like that image you linked, it's tastefully "muted" compared to what i do with the curves (rainbow extravaganza!) ;P

i'd be interested to know, btw, if downloading and running indigo renderer [link] causes the same crash (for example with a scene loaded). it's also using an opengl window, and that would all but confirm it.

thanks :) these fixes were long overdue actually, as are the linux and mac builds. if no problems are reported, i'll work on making those before continuing with the bigger new features, such as exposing the winter xforms.

Hi guys, sorry it's been aaaages since the last update :noes: I've been extremely busy working on the recent Indigo Renderer 3.4 release!
Although there hasn't been an "official" update to Chaotica since version 0.48, I've been quietly hacking away on it and offering beta versions in the :#Aposhack: chat channel, the latest version of which is linked above for downloading. Thanks very much to you guys for all the help and encouragement, it's really really appreciated! :heart:
Saving images with alpha channel is now supported, and alpha has its own response curve. Besides the performance and accuracy improvements, the other major additions are the licensing system and the diagnostics window, which I'd like to quickly talk about here:

Stochastic Labs and SIGGRAPHI'm doing a residency at Stochastic Labs in Berkeley until July 25th, then will be in Vancouver in August 11-16 giving a talk at SIGGRAPH (!!), finally touring around western USA again in September.
If you're in the area and wanna meet up lemme know! I'll try to organise a talk at UC Berkeley with a bunch of flame fractal people (Erik Reckase, FarDareisMai, Platinus, mfeemster) around mid July, that would be really cool if it happens :D

Lots of new stuff: JWildfire V0.44 releaseJust released JWildfire V0.44.
All of the numerous changes belong to the fractal flames generator T.I.N.A. , this release is some kind of "consolidation release". Complete list of changes:
- resolution and quality profiles for the main editor and the interactive renderer
- quality- and resolution-profile-editor
- quality- and resolution-related settings removed from the Preferences-window
- randomize color keyframe position in the random gradient generator to create more interesting gradients
- use gradients of random size in the random flame generators
- "From Editor"/"To Editor" buttons to quick exchanging from fractals between the editor and the interactive renderer
- rudimentary statistics display in the interactive renderer
- automatically clear the screen in the interactive renderer
- the interactive renderer also now respects the quality setting (from the render profile) and does not "overrender" as quickly as before

New tools for artists: JWildfire V0.53 releaseJust released JWildfire V0.53.
Major additions where made to fractal flame editor regarding to controlling image quality at the artist level. There is now an antialiasing option which you can specify at the transform level and some additional powerful gradient manipulation tools.

- new antialising option on the transform level, you can control this by two parameters: amount (how many samples are affected by this effect) and radius (how strong is the antialasing effect)
- new gradient manipulation functions: invert and reverse gradient

Major additions where made to the fractal flames generator T.I.N.A. regarding random generators and generating sub flames. You can now create own worlds with just a few mouseclicks. And the sub flames may even be animated!
To wrap any fractal into a suflame just click the new "SF" button in the preview area, here is an example screenshot:

JWildfire with interactive renderer: V0.43 releaseJust released JWildfire V0.43.
Major changes where made to the fractal flames generator T.I.N.A. - this time with a complete new feature – the interactive renderer.  The interactive renderer serves two purposes:
1. Explore random fractals in a really funny way. You can now follow the rendering of a fractal. If you have seen enough just press the NEXT button to get a new randomly generated flame. If you like it you can save it or copy it to the clipboard to tweak it in the main editor. Of course, you can load or paste any (non random) fractal into the interactive renderer.
2. WYSIWYG: Render an image until you are satisfied. Here is no oversampling applied. You can save the image all the time while it still rendering. So you can have a closer look at it to see if its really done, e.g. in a image processing software.

The movie editor is one of the simplest-to-use things on planet Earth  You start with just a few mouseclicks – and created a movie:
- load or generate a fractal you want to animate in the fractal editor
- press the new "M" button in the fractal editor, the fractal is copied to the JWFMovie Maker
- switch back to editor and load or generate a second fractal you want to animate
- press the new "M" button in the fractal editor again
- Congratulations, you have created your first morphing fractal animation in JWildfire!  You could now play with the realtime-preview (slider between the center view or "Play" button) or save it as *.swf file

Major additions where made to the user interface regarding editing of numerical values.
Nearly anything can now be modified by just dragging the mouse and you can see the changes immediately – exploring fractal flames was never such fun before
Additionaly, manual entered numerical values are now applied immediately – not only after pressing RETURN.

JWildfire V0.51 with dedicated launcherJust released JWildfire V0.51 which I'm really proud to present.
All those problems with starting the application and using wrong settings etc. should now be resolved … because I have created an own JWildfire-dedicated launcher!
To make it even more sweet the JWildfire users group did a contest for creating images which are displayed in the launcher. So you are always welcomed with a nice image :-)

Additionally there are about 20 new variations available… most of them are supporting the 3D mode :-)
Complete list of changes:
- created a own JWildfire launcher (as separate application), removed the previously used launcher ("appstart")
- included 15 images from the launcher image voting contest into the launcher
