From late 2004 when I first saw the film at the ages of 8 and 9 until early 2005 at the age of 9, I was confused as to what kind of chess piece that was supposed to be. I initially thought it was supposed to be a horseless knight. Since the face looks like a knight helmet to me.

And that the reason she ended up capturing Ron was because Ron was on the square she thought she'd been directed to move to. Then I realised that she must have been on the opposing side. It wasn't until early 2005 that I discovered that the chess pieces were different colours.

I did notice that the white pieces looked lighter when Ron gave Harry and Hermione directions on what chess pieces to take the places of. But I assumed that it was a side effect caused by lighting. My next thought was that she was a bishop.

Though one of my relatives said that she must have been a rook since a bishop can't move along ranks and files. I was doubtful that she was a rook because rooks always resemble castles. And she looked nothing like a castle.

I did recall reading a fraction of the chapter 'Through the Trapdoor' where the white queen was the one that captured Ron. And after rewatching the chess scene from the film, I noticed that the camera focussed on the queen shortly after Ron mentioned the word 'queen' so I realised that that must have been the white queen from the book.
