What's so special about "No Man's Sky"?

All of a sudden people around including Youtubers are playing it. Have not checked it out yet, but it seems so appealing to people all of a sudden.

It's a game that was massively hyped by the media (and players, I must admit).  The premise seems promising: go from planet to planet doing quests, gathering materials, upgrading your equipment, and ultimately proceeding on your quest to find out what mysteries await at the galactic center.  However, the game is very poorly coded, barely able to break 30 FPS on even the most advanced PCs and outright not running for many.  The procedullary generated thing seems good, but rather than using Spore's model (randomized skeletons and bones of varying thickness/length then building the outer flesh on it), the game using an extremely limited system that just mixes and matches pre-made parts blocks, which means that you begin to recognize similarities between planets very quickly.  The gameplay is typical survival fare, but it's big flaw is that it's so homogenous.  There is zero practical difference between planets, like one being rich in minerals while another is a barren hellscape filled with bloodthirsty creatures.  No matter where you go, you'll be doing the same things over and over and over again.  The game's strongest points are its space battles, but they are very infrequent.

Overall it's just another case of an ambitious indie dev failing to deliver.  It's a shame, I was really looking forward to it.

It's an open world exploration game, what makes it unique is that it basically has little to no restrictions on where you go and how you get there. For example you go through the atmosphere if a planet to go there, no loading screens. Another would be that every planet seems unique, it's all randomly generated. Personally this is how I've seen the game through trailers, but it really brings out the potential in next gen consoles.
