Last time I found myself Stripped down and bereft Covered in rubble In a world of trouble I was surrounded by the debris Of me There was no body To grow a poppy No good table Like in a medieval fable To lay down my knife Wrapped in burlap only time To look at all the pieces of me And us The only copy of the thesis of dreams We wrote together Torn into confetti My ruins are unprotected No treaty or heritage Can cover such a loss My insurance not worth his cost Maybe this time With this guy It'll be different and I'll be precious Could I confess this Potential epilogue Creeps into the edges of A guarded heart The place stories have to start

I knocked on every door I found Until I ran out of town… I tried to turn back but couldn’t go there And saw obscurity had fallen all over I couldn’t see the sky’s face in the violet I don’t think it has one in this silence Was this penitentiary my own design Is this meant to be the rest of my life Memory fragments under dusty sheets Giving shape to feeling no longer in my reach All the halls are hollow Broken bluebird bones I am the echo but no one called for me Holding my breath to be free Tiptoeing along hoping I’ll wake the dead Searching for nails in the boards I tread Crumbling like shoddy old plaster I’m a shadow with no casting I don’t think there’s anyone here alive Why wonder how very scared I am to try
