POL - White Dresses
“Raindrops on roses, and girls in white dresses!
And sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
Of the shades of the sheets before all the stains,
And a few more of your least favorite things!”
The little girl kicked her feet back and forth, gripping the edge of the chair with elation. Her mother had just finished pinning up her hair in a halo braid bun, little white flowers strung throughout the weave. She wiggled a bit in her chair, her mother sighing in fond annoyance for the fifth time.
“Almira, sit still! I can’t finish your hair if you keep your wriggling, silly lamb!” Roberta chuckled, putting her hand on the child’s shoulder in an attempt to steady her. Almira wiggled again, feet increasing in tempo against the chair. Roberta put the finishing touches on her daughter’s hair, her fingers lingering on tiny strands by the little one’s face, a soft smile gracing her features.
