Update: I opened an Etsy shop! The original can be bought here: www.etsy.com/fr/shop/luckystar…

More paintings will be added soon!

The second animal in my endangered animals series is the vaquita porpoise, the world's smallest cetacean and it is critically endangered with less than 30 vaquitas left in the world. Illegal fishing threatens this species and it will most probably go extinct if drastic measures are not taken. The vaquita (Phocoena sinus), meaning 'little cow' in Spanish is endemic to a small part of the Gulf of California.

Wikipedia:

The population decrease is largely attributed to bycatch from the illegal gillnet fishery for the totoaba, a similarly sized endemic drum that is also critically endangered. A partial gillnet ban was put in place for two years in May 2015; its imminent expiration at the end of May 2017 spurred a campaign to have it extended and strengthened. The population decline has occurred despite an investment of tens of millions of dollars by the Mexican government in efforts to eliminate the bycatch. A protective housing/captive breeding program, unprecedented for a marine mammal, has been developed and is undergoing feasibility testing, being now viewed as necessary to rescue the species. However, the sea pen housing needed to implement this strategy is not expected to be available until October 2017 which is feared may be too late. Additionally, the ability of the vaquita to survive and reproduce while confined to a sanctuary is uncertain. The Mexican government approved the plan on 3 April 2017, with commencement projected to begin in October 2017.

This is amazing, to say the least.

I tried watercolour a long while ago, but never got the hang of it. You, however, managed to get colour and detail down well.

The fish seems streamline and like it's floating on a cloud rather than water.

Its eyes are a deep brown that works well with it, and its pattern seems appropriate. Even the mouth works for the piece beautifully.

Though, if I had to guess, then the hardest part would be its right pectoral fin. The darker colour makes it more apparent, though.

All in all, this is a great work of art.
