I can't believe I drew another brunette woman with roses in her hair, somebody stop the presses! The waiter at my favorite diner also says I need to try something besides Huevos Rancheros, but I like to stick with something once I know I like it.

You should stick to huevos rancheros, it probably gives you the proteins you need to make kick ass drawings like this one.
I love the colors, lining and her hair.

oh what, try harder like coming onto some random person's picture JUST to say that it's a rip off of some REALLY FAMOUS ARTIST with no other context to your comment? "it just needed to be said" - like OH MY GOD even if it was one freaking person on the planet might not already know who ji is and then find out 5 seconds later anyway. oh i'm sorry that must be a real burden for you. are you like 15 because that's the last time i was stupid enough to act that way. i was simply responding to you in the way you presented yourself. i'm not trying to start a fight here, just hear me out:

sheila is a fucking amazing person, and a very talented artist, and she doesn't deserve to be randomly bombed on by some little goth kid who paints wanna-be "edgy" lowbrow art and takes bxw photos of herself in a bathtub. sorry, it needed to be said, right? its all been done too... guess what kiddo, nobody f'ing cares!
MY POINT WAS, if you actually READ the article, that sylvia ji and basically everyone else is just "ripping off" the guy that invented catrina calaveras in the first place! just like everyone that draws anime is ripping off some other anime style, for example. WELL OKAY we've established that SO NOW WHAT. it's VERY obvious in her art - its called BEING INSPIRED BY SOMETHING. she is probably inspired by many other artists as well, and that is how "her" style came to be.... just like how everyone else forms their unique vision, including sheila, and im sure including you. did i just blow your mind or what? did you ever stop to think that maybe sheila HMM, i dont know, likes taxidermy/animals and feathers and all that other dumb crap as well, just like ji, and just like MYSELF? it's not like her entire gallery is full of nothing but sugar skull girls that are obviously similar to what ji has decided to focus her work on, etc. in fact her gallery could be claimed as way more of a rip off of my art than ji's if anything, and that's why i'm taking the time to write this to you. i'm sick of this lame ass art culture where everyone tries to step on their own toes first because they're afraid of someone else doing it for them. oh right, excuse me, you're so much more righteous for saying that your like, ONE PICTURE of a calavera you claim it to be a rip... because you're so scared that people are going to do the same shit you just did to you, that you already said it was a rip off yourself. well, great.

so yeah thnx 4 adding your own context to it but guess what, she's not hurting anyone and she loves what she does, don't try and make up some internet argument about it and go back to doing your own stuff. she's not sitting around making money on it, or doing shit at all except sharing some pretty picture she drew and getting a couple favs on it and whatever, and you're coming in here with a one liner being all like HEY NICE RIP OFF. well WTF GIRL how is anyone supposed to know where you're coming from and if that's supposed to be rude or not? don't sit there and act like that's not exactly what you did, either. :/ it was an unnecessary remark in the first place.

blah blah it's just deviantart and who cares but i am seriously so sick of this dumb crap, i have watched and even been a part of this horrible art culture where every kid with a pencil thinks they can come on here and act like they are the most acclaimed art critic in the universe. i am not saying that anything you are doing with your art is bad, sorry for insulting you but it's to make a point - what i mean is that people should not be sitting around in fear of being accused of just ripping everyone off to the point of having to SAY that they're ripping someone off first because theyre afraid of someone else saying it for them. i made that mistake a lot of times... and then i learned better. everyone should. wtf is it 2005 all up in here?

while i agree that sylvia ji is a great artist, you need learn a little humility and educate yourself before you go deciding that every single person who draws sugar skull girls are ~ripping off sylvia ji~, or anything similar about any other artist, because it's bullshit.

okay i'll break it down to you since you're obviously too inarticulate to read properly, hence why you didnt understand the relevance of my link in the first place.

all of your art is horribly uninspired, or flat out copied, but it's okay just because you say it?
so you're going to come onto some artists page that actually makes some fairly decent and inspired stuff instead of godawful watercolors of giant eyeballs - LOL DONT GET ME STARTED - and try and make yourself feel better by picking out the ONE picture that has any sort of resemblance to a famous artist's art and act like it was your duty to humanity to mention her name here, like anyone is going to give a crap.

oh and so if i speak my mind completely unsolicited to you, it obviously makes you uncomfortable and you don't want to listen, but when you do the same thing to anyone - in this case sheila - it's supposed to okay? everyone's supposed to just lay there and take it because you're BADASS, you know internet meme's too and you SPEAK YOUR MIND! ?! REGARDLESS of the fact of it being right or wrong, this is still what you did. give me a break.

and i like how you're too vapid to even respond to people properly when they make valid points, like the both of us, so you go back to one liners and internet meme.
HAH yeah, okay, you and everyone else. you're a copy in yourself.

good job being a hypocrite about LITERALLY EVERYTHING. grow a freakin personality, and come back when you've actually MAYBE gained some sort of knowledge enough to be a critic of art, and MAYBE then you can talk.

just get out of here, seriously. you're ridiculous.

I didnt say she invented the sugar skull, i know what that is. Im saying she is pretty original in the way she paints girls faces with sugar skull makeup and flat tone hair with flowers in it and a textured background. I didnt see your other ones but they look pretty original.

You got me, I'm a bit ole' rip off artist. Thanks for letting me know by the way, I had no idea anything I did was like anything any one else did.
And also, Sylvia Ji is not original in that. She and I both are ripping off Alphonse Mucha with the flat toned hair/flowers, and the entire country of Mexico.
Yeah, I get what you're saying, I've been around the art block a few times myself. What I don't get, is why you would make that comment, did you think I'd deny that other people have similar styles? Did you think I'd have a problem with being one of thousands of members of a current art trend? I'm well aware that I didn't pull this out of my butt.
Yes, it is a pretty nice Sylvia Ji rip off, I'm pretty proud of my skills. Better than a lot of people who do the sugar skulls on ladies with long dark hair, so I'll take that as a compliment. My Sylvia Ji rip off could certainly be worse.
In fact, I think I improved on (what is to me) some of the less interesting Calavera art out there. And I could take or leave Sylvia Ji. Her women aren't delicate enough for me, but she is a talented artist, and surely a better artist than I. Now Audrey Kawasaki, that's who I like to rip off.
And my friend Adam, that's who I was ripping off when I drew this one, I actually hadn't heard of Sylvia Ji till I was searching the internet for sugar skull ideas and found her, but I had seen his drawings and thought they were amazing.

Yeah i think its pretty good, probably one of the better ripoffs ive seen. good job. I agree on audrey kawasaki too, ive actually done some paintings in her style a few times haha. I made that comment because i didnt see you or anyone mention sylvia ji, I just felt like it needed to be said.

Really, next time think about not saying something so insulting. I'll be completely honest, this is not a rip off. If you look at my gallery, I ALWAYS draw my girls with flat-toned hair, so just because some of them also have sugar skulls really doesn't have anything to do with Sylvia Ji.
The first time I heard of Sylvia Ji was because some one compared my art to hers.
I just get sick of people thinking of her as the one coming up with this, there are so many other things going on, she's not the influence of so much as the product of the pop-surrealist antiquarian hipster femininity-worshiping movement. Which is the same movement I'm a product of.
Sorry, but Sylvia Ji is talented and her work is lovely, but she's no more original than I am. It's dia de los muertos meets art neauvea meet rockabilly, so saying that I'm ripping her off implies she's doing something no one did before her. Believe it or not, people are capable of combining these concepts without having heard of her.
I am extremely open about my influences, but the influences for this piece as for many of my others came from many places, and just because you associate sugar skulls/girls with her doesn't mean Sylvia Ji was one of my influences, much less my rip off. In fact, I guess why it's annoying me so much is because I'm not even a real fan of her work. It's good but it's not my style, and I can think of a dozen other artists I'd want to "rip off" before her. That, and I don't feel like I have to grovel and list every influence ever unless it is extremely heavy and specific on a particular piece.

If you didn't care, why would you say something so inflammatory and insulting? Listen, if you're trying to set things straight in the world by calling out all the phonies, I'm not being sarcastic when I say I get where you're coming from, but you opened this can of worms....it's a little late to act like you did it inconsequentially.
Incidentally, going about life by dropping social grenades on strangers and then acting like you're too cool to care about internet (or real life) drama probably won't do much but impede your enjoyment of what otherwise have might of been some really nice relationships with other artists, not mention potential friends.
And oh you got me, I used multiple words to express a concept that was too subtle for a single word. Maybe I should just make all my statements about art trends and influence say BLAH BLAH BLAH SYLVIA JI RIP OFF BLAH BLAH SYLVIA JI SYLVIA JI
Are you really going to hold it against me that I am actually capable of and willing to back myself and my art up? Or are just too cool and TL;DR.
At the risk of sounding like an old person, you might find that life is more enjoyable when you engage people about their influences instead of ASSUMING that you know exactly what they're doing and why, and chastising them for it.
Life in general is more fun when it's a conversation instead of a crusade.
I also find it funny that you also assume I don't care what you think, just like you assume that I am purporting to be a totally original artist. Unlike you, I don't engage people unless I feel like it's worth talking to them, and I also don't pretend that I don't care what people think of me while engaging with internet communities.

"Remake?" I'm not going to claim originality, but she's not exactly the inventor of the sugar skull. I found my inspiration from browsing around dA and some other sources, such as Mexican arts and crafts. Not to mention my own style haha
