WONDERFUL capture of that fuzzy-wuzzy BumbleBee!! Clap

What's nice about this one is that BOTH pair of wings are in focus (the larger front wings and the smaller hind wings).  There are MANY "flies" that mimic bees and wasps in color and shape, but flies ony have one set of wings and bees and wasps have two sets.  Great job for your first macro!! :)

I will haveto practice macro in the future, I totally love this lens but I bought it during early autumn when most of bugs dissapeared but wait till spring :)

Think of it this way, you can use the winter months to practice on inanimate subjects so you can get the hang of how different settings affect DOF, focus, lighting, and so on :)  Of course, there are also creepy crawlies, like spiders, inside every house, and so you can practice on those as well!  :D (Big Grin)   Have fun!!

of course, you are right, that´s what I plan to do :), I am not very familiar with spiders etc. but would like to try something frozen and so... Just need to be in that correct mood for this... for every case I am going to try some more macro soon :)

"Boys with toys", it is said. Looks like it can apply to at least some young women also. ;) Have a nice journey in the macro world..! :)

Those little fellows are interesting to watch, so diligent at what they do while defying gravity doing it. I agree, depth of field is very delicate thing in this kind of pictures. Based on some pictures I have seen, the road to perfection may lead through several shots with various focus points, followed By hours and hours of photoshopping combining the pictures layer by layer... Still fun, I hope. :D

I sold my 85mm/f1.8 to get this lens, it's insane how sharp it is... got to say I am still amazed how great optics is. I think it´s my favorite lens for now. Unfortunally autumn is almost here and most of flowers are gone. I will have to wait till spring with lots of bugs :)

Having a camera on par with the lense helps, too. :)

Of course depending on what you want to shoot, autumn with its dead or dying flowers might not be so bad for closeups either. Gruesome beauty, or something... Especially if there were some frost at night and you happened to be there before it melts away. If you do get frost, that is... No problem here. ;(

I plan to try some frost and possibly snowlakes, not sure if I'll be able to capture that but definitely I want to try it out :)

Nice capture!  Which lens did you get?

Hi Jon, thank you. I've got Canon 180mm/f3.5 L Macro :). Awesome lens I can say, I am in love with it!

Thanks Lucie.  I will have to try the 180mm L.  I tried the 100mm 2.8L and it is a nice lens too.

been thinking about that one too but later I´ve decided to go for 180 because of optical quality, the fact I can use it with teleconvertor and you have a greater distance which is quite important if you photograph a bugs etc. :)

for sure, it´s my favorite lens at this moment :)

I'm a member of Canon Professional Services...so I'll take your advise and get them to send me the 180mm for evaluation (which I also did with the 100mm).  Thanks for your input.
luciekout's avatar
yes, do it... I am in love with this lens since very first moment. And let me know how you liked it!
evhwolfgang's avatar
Will do.  It will take them a few weeks to send it to me.  Once I have a chance to try it out I will let you know what I thought.
