The origin of bridal bouquets goes back many centuries, when brides wore fragrant bunches of garlic, chives and other herbs to protect themselves against evil...

The bridal bouquets in both paintings (also see Bridal Bouquet 1) appear as clouds of
flaring up dust and as fire of a destructive eruption.
As in the original meaning of the protective herbal bouquets; the bouquets in the painting cary a symbolic hope to protect us -humanity- from the destructive and unforeseen forces of evil.

Did you know that in Victorian times flowers were very important as bearers of secret messages? Bridal flowers were therefore carefully chosen to convey the proper meaning. Flowers to avoid: anemones, which stands for disease and lavender, which symbolizes distrust... or what about the yarrow with the grim message 'I declare war on you'? And however sweet marigolds are, it is perhaps just as well that the flower that symbolizes despair, is rarely seen in a wedding bouquet.
