why're you superimposed on to this background? all of your other images are 100% authentic photography, as far as I can tell. Except thi series...?

I'm actually not superimposed. It just looks that way, for some reason - I should've softened the edges. But I'm really standing there in the scene. This photo is hardly edited...I just brightened up the overall image.

Hmmm... well you can definitely tell this picture and background are not the same picture. For absolute sure the photo of you was cut and paste on the background, because your lighting doesn't match the lighting in the background at all. With such a bright sun at your back, there's no way you'd look as bright and detailed as you do.
With light that bright, anything standing in front of it would be simply a silhouette with barely any detailing whatsoever. The shadow beneath you would be almost black. And you indeed look like you're floating, not even attached to the ground.

Whether you piece together photographs is up to you, there's nothing wrong with it. Just make sure you harmonize all the elements so it doesn't look amateur.

I'm a photographer and educator of 30 years and I'm sorry to disagree this could very well be a real image done with studio lighting outside.

It is a very easy technique to do. It's called flash fill. It just requires filling the subject that had been silhouetted by the sun with flash. It can be done with one flash unit.

I teach this exact technique in my workshops which may be where this photographer learned it since he has attended one of them.

You can see the same technique in this image

Perhaps it would just be easier to ask Luana if it is a straight image or a photo manipulation rather than jump to conclusions.

Perhaps that's the case, and if a photo-manip look was what the photographer was going for, hey, all the power to them. I guess you're right about jumping to conclusions, and it was my ignorance speaking there, since I didn't know you could create that effect with a single photograph. However, personally I think that if I made this image, and people looked at it and automatically thought there was something awry with it and jumped to the conclusion that it was an amateur that created the piece of work, I would hesitate to say that it was a successful portfolio piece. Artists can claim that they purposefully did anything that people might critique on (such as drawing egyptian eyes- straight on while the face is turned). That's fine, if the target audience realizes that it's deliberate and appreciates it. But chances are the audience will automatically think, 'Oh, this artist has no idea how to draw realistic eyes and so drew them all wrong.' That was my automatic thought while viewing this piece for the first time- a photo-manip by someone that has absolutely no sense of how light behaves. I may think now that it could indeed be one photograph, but that doesn't take away the sense that there's something amiss with it and thus prevents me from appreciating it (being the lighting is still startlingly unnatural).

Just for your info, I looked at your piece and I did not react the same way. I thought it was beautiful. Perhaps because the background was low-light instead of brilliant light, it does make sense that with extra lighting you would see the subject clearly, even naturally. It was just done in such a way that lit up the model without changing the background just enough that she still looks part of the whole instead of cut out. That's probably what makes the two so different in my eyes.
So, to conclude this barrage, kudos on your beautiful photograph, I realize now that I can't assume something in an art field I know very little about, and that knowledge has not changed my level of appreciation for this piece, which is fine. Thank you for the information regarding this particular type of photographic effect.

You just stated very eloquently something I try to teach in my workshops. That we live in a single light world and when you start adding lighting in a way that goes against what we see in nature people instinctually feel something is wrong.

Thank you for the kind words about my image.

Yes, it COULD be done with Lights outdoor. But it really doesn't look like it is.

The light looks not homogenous enough, The composite is too obvious.

Sorry I have never seen homogenous used that way so I assume you mean even enough on her?

Looks pretty flat and even on her but hey , let's ask!

Luana is it a straight image or a composite?

I work with her often, I'll call and ask that way we can stop all the speculation.

The editing doesn't do the shot justice though.. looks like it's been badly chopped or over-sharpened or something.

It's because the model was cut-and-pasted on the background. The lighting on her skin doesn't match the background at all. Bright light behind her would make the shadow much darker, and she would be more like a silhouette.
