~~~ Disney Moments: The Hunchback of NotreDame – Dance La Esmeralda… Dance! ~~~
(Created 05.11)
Finally FINALLY after many many months of doing everything else BUT drawing for myself, I finally managed to sit down and continue my Disney Moments series, and I have to say I’m pretty pleased n.n
I picked this specific scene of Esmeralda (meaning - the whole dancing, teasing, showing some cleavage, are you aware she is dancing on a high stage flipping her dress while all the men are looking from below o.O sequence) mainly because one of the things that amazed me the most in this movie for some reason was this shadowy effect done on her dress. I clearly remember going in my mind, while watching this on the big screen, “how the HELL did they do that OMG it looks so amazing how it moves with the animation it looks like real silk OMG!” (thoughts in my mind run so fast I don’t have time to add – “,”). And I have to say even after trying to recreate it I’m still not sure how they did it exactly.
It’s funny though, cause in this movie Disney used this blur effect (for the first time I think, or at least the first time that it’s so distinctive) on all the shadows and highlights and I really hated it (still do). Then again, today they are using an even cheaper and uglier effect (in my opinion) so looking back I guess it wasn’t so bad, he he. But still OMG I love her in her red dress, the feeling of the fabric showing through animation just blew me away.
And yes… I had TONS of fun drawing her hair. Can you honestly blame me :ninjaplot:
So… Story time? :
I was very skeptical before The Hunchback came out. I remember watching Pocahontas on VHS for the first time and just dying to see the commercial for the new upcoming Disney movie that summer (this was before I had internet). Then the commercial was on and I was like “What THE?! I mean, like, the Hunchback of NotreDame?? What was Disney thinking? Some dark depressing book about nothing but misery and pain, how the heck are they going to make a 2D Disney movie out of it?”
Well, I guess with a little bit of pixie dust anything’s possible, right?
The Hunchback came out when I was like 15, so I was mentally mature enough to really enjoy this movie with all its aspects. Up till today I truly believe this is the darkest and most mature (you can call it) 2D Disney movie ever made. I believe it’s probably scratching the limits of what Disney allow themselves in their 2D movies (though I have to say Ray’s death in Princess and the Frog really shocked me) and I’m honestly happy they were still sane back in those days and didn’t turn this movie into a complete mockery or whatever.
So I remember, after watching and falling in love with this movie (and its score), I promised myself that I would never doubt Disney again and that I should just trust them to do their job (YES! That’s your job, Disney, in case you forgot), which is to bring true animated magic on to the screen and into our lives.
Thank you for listening and viewing my work.
Your humble servant,
6-7 hours over a few days with tons of getting up…
OMG my cat is staring at me now. I know it’s tuna time, but it still freaks me out every time she does that…
The pose is really good. I give you credit for the life you put into it. The hair is really well done but I do remember that the see through fabric didn't distort the way the background looked (thus not giving it a blurred effect) Secondly the dress is really really shiny beyond silk. It reminds me of the plump lip commercials showing shiny lips with all the lipstick they slap on them. But overall you did a really creditable job. The lighting effects stayed the same giving the depth of "true lighting" almost. The one major thing I have to say that can be a little bit of a bugger and I know even I wonder as much as you do is the shadows. I still think the shadow could have bin set a little bit more better considering the pole ends where her head is, assuming that the pole is longer then what we see in the picture alone. Its not perfect and when I say perfect I mean imperfect because we all see through imperfect eyes. So you did a really good job over all. I have bin doing Digital media for a good 3 years now and I know that to get this good takes a long, long time. So when I see this I give respect to the artist.
Thank you very much for your honest remarks and I would take them under consideration, since I'm always looking for ways to improve and another set of eyes is a good way to do it ^_^
This is looking really nice! You've got the anatomy down really well, not to mention the motion(especially in the dress) but you asked for critique and I've got some.
The lighting is otherwise well done but I find it odd how there's only one source of light, yet her legs and left arm are lighted from an opposite direction from said light-source. I'd suggest either correcting it or -if you're not up to it- at least keeping this in mind for your future images.
Although your overall anatomy is good, the face does bother me. The angle it's portrayed from shouldn't allow us to see the underside of her nose. Right now it seems like she's got an extremely upturned nose.
Also I noticed that her eyebrows overlap the headband. I'm not sure if you intended them to or not so I won't comment more on that.
Lastly, (I know this is a very small notion but) the lens flare effect usually comes from looking towards the sun so it's kind of an unnecessary detail here.
All in all, even though it's got its inconsistencies, it's a really nice picture that's definitely pleasing to look at. Just remember to pay a bit more attention to things such as the light-source and facial details, in the future. c:
Lighting - The light source should be above and a bit from the side, but yes, sometimes when painting I have to "cheat" a bit to fit the piece more than to fit was is correct. But I agree with you, maybe I should have done it a bit differently.
Eyebrows - yes, you are so right, now looking at it again they ARE on top of the headband and although when I was working on it, it didn't bother me, now I see it. But.. oh well..
Thank you for your time.
At the first sight this illustration looks beautiful. Colors are very bright so this, along with the subject popularity, create a great impact.
I gave you two stars for the originality because you reproduced the picture from the movie frame, so you did your own copy trying to be faithful to the original frame. So, very good reproduction but poor invention (but i think it was not this your aim..).
The background is very well reproduced with the fading effect to give distance, however Esmeralda, despite the dinamicity of her pose, looks a bit stiff. I think this depends on the fact that her legs, and her lower body in genenral, are a bit too short than the normal. Her face instead is very well done, and you caught very well her expression.
To sum up, great colors, good impact, but some anatomy flaws are evident
This is a very detailed rendition of Esmeralda that could easily be mistaken for a still from the actual Disney movie.
Esmeralda does pole dancing and nobody bats an eye.
Mikey Cyrus does pole dancing and everybody loses their minds.
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame was a very dark film, darker than a lot of live-action movies in some respects, which inspired me to write the article below:
Pardon my lang Miss but why hasn't Disney hired you? You're art is beautiful--EPIC I just watched the Lady Ice movie, loved it. It reminded me of Pocahontas and Brother Bear :boogie::huggle: the animation is great. But seriously if Disney had you on the team, I'd watch their movies. I was watching your movie and thought, man it would be odd if she was the mother of the Spring Spirit from Fantasia.
