The smell of rich, damp earth permeated the air as Asphodel ducked into the badger sett, his ginger fur brushing against the earth.

It was a little small, he judged, but it'd do.

"Delly?" He heard the gentle voice of his friend outside. "What do you think?"

He backed out of the den tail-first, dislodging some loose clumps of dirt. He shook himself free of dust and looked to where the voice had come from.

Not unexpectedly, his friend Acorn had settled themself down beside the hole, where they had been peering down curiously after Asphodel. Their fur was a mix of torbie colors, stripes and white markings abound. Their narrow frame shook in the wind.

Asphodel nudged Acorn with a paw. "Well..." he started. "We have a lot of work ahead of us, I'd say."

He looked down at his paw with distaste for a moment before placing it down. "Unfortunately, only enough room to fit more vulnerable cats, and even then we have to dig it out a little." He curled his lip in displeasure at the imagined feeling of dirt between his small claws. "But if you don't mind the work, it should be fine."

Acorn lit up, seeming to relax. "Ah, that puts my mind at ease," they purred. "Enough room for us, I'm sure?"

"If we go in a little ways, yeah, I think so. I didn't smell fresh badger-scent, so we should be safe in there, too."

Acorn got up and pushed past the ginger tom, the smaller cat disappearing into the hole. Muffled speaking could be heard, but nothing discernable. With a sigh, Asphodel entered the sett again, shaking his head.

--

"You know," came Acorn's voice after they'd settled down in their new den, "I'm glad I came here. I think I'll sleep well tonight after all the travelling we've done."

Asphodel grunted. "As will I. I hope I haven't taken you on a wild goose-chase, though."

Laughter filled the room. "No! No no. I'm happy to be somewhere new, away from home. I know that there used to be wild cats here before, so I feel confident we will have luck here."

"Luck? I dunno about luck..." Asphodel said, flopping over onto his side. "If there's anything that requires luck, it's the idea of actually thriving out here, rather than surviving..."

A nudge from Acorn startled him. "I think if you had family out here before, you'll have family out here again..." The torbie cat grew quieter. "Even if that family is me."

"Haha, you sound glum," remarked Asphodel. "Come on! Isolation is nothing. We've traveled how many seasons together?"

"Oh, stop that." Acorn grumbled back. "I just worry about you. About us."

Discreetly, Asphodel scooted closer, curling around Acorn affectionately. "I thought I was the one who was worrying, and here the fields have turned..." He buried his nose in his forelegs. "I'm glad I'm here with you, and not on my own. I think solitude would drive me to madness."

Acorn said nothing, but Asphodel could feel the vibrations from their chest.

"Besides," he continued, "you complete me. Together we can do anything."

"I trust you." Acorn's voice came from the now curled-up ball that was Acorn. "And I believe in your vision."

A chuckle. "My vision, huh? Well, I think we'll find some interested cats if we poke our noses around and put our heads together."

"For what?" Acorn replied, muffled. "Tell me about it, again. I'm sleepy, and it will help me sleep to hear your voice."

"Well, you remember the old ValeClan, yes?  I want to bring it back to its former glory. I want to remember my roots, before it dispersed... I'd never thought of it, but Acorn, you don't have the same sort of roots, right?"

Gentle snoring greeted his ears. He chuckled, curling closer.

"Goodnight, Acorn."

Encounter 1
[ Queen | Pleasant | Delusional | 1/3 Pregnancy | 4/5 Health ]

When Acorn and Asphodel awake, the den is swathed in the early, buttery rays of morning sun. And blocking it from their faces is a pudgy, smiling molly. She has her paws tucked under her daintily, and leans forward to lick right between Asphodel's ears, "Wake up my children. The new day is here. As your mother, I need to be sure you get something to eat."

What will your cat do next?

ah, i gotcha! i'll remember that for next time! thank you so much for the roll!

Encounter response:

Asphodel's whisker twitches amusedly, and Acorn looks at the queen as though she's grown another tail. "Drady," Acorn hisses his song-name under their breath, "My dear friend, who is this?"

"Well, my mother, I suppose," he replies in a jovial tone. "It has been far too long, mother! I don't recognize your scent at all, and I worry your name has changed too."

Acorn rolls their eyes, but says nothing; as much as they feel this is a silly direction to go with it, it'll get some answers without provoking a hostile response.

Encounter 1

The molly thrums softly, leaning down to rasp her tongue a few more times between Asphodel's ears, "It's all right dear. I'm here now, and all shall be explained in the hallowed tales of our ancestors. We need to feed you two up!" her attention flickers to Acorn as well, though her gaze doesn't quite focus on them, "After all, you need to stay big and strong so you can help take care of your little siblings when they arrive."

Asphodel can't help but twitch his ears in curiosity. "Hallowed tales, you say? What do you know of my ancestors?" he responds, watching with an even gaze.

As if on cue, his friend Acorn pipes up. "I don't think she knows anything, Delly," she spits. "I think she's not quite here, nor there. Ow!" A smack from Asphodel.

"Be quiet, you!" he responds quietly, and then in a whisper, adds, "Besides, do you really see a downside in letting this stranger - in many senses of that word - care for us?"

"Harrumph." Acorn grumbles back. "I guess you have a point, but..."

"Great! Great." The whisper grows back to speaking volume as Asphodel points himself back at the queen. "Do tell me, mum, what was your name again?"

Encounter 1

The molly softly dips her head, "In the old days, our ancestors walked the land. Their pawsteps carved out the lakes and rivers where they paced, and where their fur was shed, grasses grew. Those who fell, whose lives ended, became the mountains, and the earth welcomed their change."

Her ears twitch at their back and forth, hesitating in her words, before she is given their attention again, and she perks up at the question, "My name is Gaia, dear. But you always called me mother of earth."

"Gaia.... Mother of the earth..." Asphodel mumbled, whilst Acorn rolled their eyes beside him. "The world's name... I believe its name in the old tongue is Kiski, roughly translated to soul-home... Do you mind that we use that name for you? You'd be a welcome addition to our group, if you wish you stay with us."

Acorn looked indignant, barely able to contain themself. "Delly, we've just met her, and you're inviting her in... are you sure that's safe?" They fix a glare on Gaia.

Asphodel can't help but laugh. "Hah, do you think a cat who's aweigh with kits would do us any harm?" Acorn's gaze moved away from both of them at this question, as if shamed. "Besides, new blood and someone who knows the old lore would be welcome in my home.

"So..." He looks back, softly smiling at Gaia. "Would you like to stay with us?"

Encounter 1
"I am blessed to have a name of the old tongue bestowed upon me by my child," she dips her head softly, blinking slowly, "And I would be eternally grateful to have a home alongside you once more~"

Congrats! A well-meaning if a bit delusional Queen has been recruited! It appears she sees Asphodel as the future older sibling to her kits... [1/3 Pregnancy + 4/5 Health]
