EDIT: Tweaked the picture some (Will do more later prolly, gonna try to make the tree and bush look better)
But the biggest edit is that I updated the story!
This is done for the "Two Worlds, One Love" contest over on
And I decided to go with something dark and sad instead of mushy and cute xD You all know me!
The Kelpie had been captured by the humans, subdued with a golden-threaded Halter, and sealed into a lake by their magic-users. They had had enough of the dark stallion tricking young maidens, only to drag them to their deaths deep beneath the surface of the lake, where they were never heard from again.
It was in the Kelpie's nature; it was not something the stallion could help. Moreover, he LIKED what he did, devouring the village and driving the humans away from his lands; stopping them from destroying everything in their path.
But he had been captured, trapped, and sealed away. He couldn't leave the lake, couldn't even touch the air. He could breathe underwater, and could go out on land for a time; but now he was trapped there. And being trapped, he couldn't hunt; The life essence of these humans, these mortal creatures kept him alive, kept his fur gleaming with health; he both craved, and needed their tender flesh and strong energies to keep his dark spirit alive. And he wouldn't have changed it even if he could. He thrived on the hunt, on the way the maiden's faces brightened into smiles as they stroked his dark fur.. then widened in horror as he turned to gaze at them with brilliant yellow eyes, lips lifting from gleaming, razor sharp teeth; thrived on their screams as they tried to pull away, only to find themselves hopelessly stuck to him. Reveled in their struggles as he dragged them, kicking, screaming, and trying desperately to get free until their lungs filled with water and their struggles stilled as their lungs starved for air. Oh, how he loved it; and oh, how he needed it.
For days he tried to escape his imprisonment, but was unable to break the surface of the water, unable to even bring a hoof out.
That was when she
came, cloaked by darkness, long black mane and tail blowing behind her in a swift night breeze. She was like the very shadow of death, the air cold around her, her eyes seeming to glow in the night. A sharp, bony horn graced her head; a unicorn, of some sort. He knew what she was; a foul creature that appeared in the night and brought horrendous nightmares and visions to all who so much as caught a glimpse of her.
The Kelpie had never seen anything more beautiful then that dark dame of the night. The Nightmare approached him; and their eyes met. She was as stricken as he; he was beautiful to her, sleek, green fur gleaming under the water's surface, yellow eyes staring into her own crimson ones. He was a fine and beautiful creature; and it tore her apart inside to see him trapped.
She tried in vain to free him, screaming her fury to the sky when she failed. A scream that was out of this world; caused every man, woman, and child who heard it to shudder and fear, sit up, and turn their lights on.
Day by day he wasted away, growing weaker and weaker as he slowly starved to death. The Nightmare was his only comfort, the only thing that made his imprisonment bearable; and he loved her. Loved her more then anything in the world. And the dark spirit loved him back, laying there with the water lapping about her slim legs and tail. Being there with him in the only way she could.
Every Dusk she appeared, and every dawn she was gone.
Day by day their love grew, her determination to free and save her beloved Kelpie never weakened. She tried and tried and tried until her sleek, black sides heaved in and out in exhaustion; until her sleek black coat was drenched in sweat. Her sharp cloven hooves did nothing more then splash the cold, dark water.
She grew desperate to free him as he lay there, just under the surface as close to her as he could get. So very close, and yet so far. He was barely breathing, just gazing at her.'The end... is near...'
he whispered lightly. 'Soon I will be free,'
His voice was dark and smooth, echoing through her mind and body in a smooth baritone.
Oh how she wished those words meant that she had finally broken the seal; but she knew that wasn't what he was talking about.
She felt her throat tightening up, her ears lowering and going back as she blinked rapidly.
No; she couldn't cry. She was a creature of the night - a beast that brought nightmares and visions that made Mortals sit up screaming in the middle of the night soaked in a cold sweat; she was the reason some people slept with their lights on. She was the reason little children slept under covers for fear of the monsters under their beds. Her terrifying nightmares and visions drive people to complete madness. She appeared like a shadow in the Night, blood red gaze piercing and vicious.
But even she couldn't stop the flood of emotions racing through her mind like ants whose colony had been doused in water.
They both knew this day was coming. The once mighty stallion was a mere shadow of what he once was; nothing more then skin and bones. His once healthy, shining fur now dull and lifeless. His once brilliant eyes sunken in and hollow. Their hooves touched in that dark, moonless night, just under the surface of the water.
She couldn't hold back anymore, the tears spilling free, falling from her eyes and running down her cheeks as her sides and body convulsed against her will. All she could do was comfort him in has last moments as her own heart tore in two.
They shared a last gaze as the Kelpie finally smiled.
'goodbye, my love...' his words whispered through her mind like a cool night breeze, before his eyes closed and he went still.
He had, indeed, found freedom. Freedom from his starving and weakened body; freedom from his imprisonment. He had found his freedom in death.
I rewrote the story, it is much better now ^^
Anyway, I tried a LOT of new things on this, and I REALLY like how it came out! It has a DECENT background for once! I made a DECENT background! I'm really quite proud of this!
... I dunno if it is just me, but it seems like after I submitted my rough lines, a lot of other people are going with sad and tragic now.... I was kinda HAPPY to be the only one who went sad and tragic and now everybody else is doing it... danget!
Well... at least I'm the only one with an EVIL unicorn and an EVIL Kelpie... and at least my story is the only one that has death. SO THERE.
