Dark Green is former US political party, Federalist which John Adams was known to be as a Federalist himself. Orange is former US party Democrat-Republican (Before the Democrats and Republicans got a divorce. LOL) 

Anything colored in white, is US then territory, they aren't counted in national elections for now. So that being said Northwest Terrritory (which would eventually become the state of Ohio and many others) are not included in the presidential election.

*Each elector cast two votes, the winner became president, and the runner-up became vice president. In 1804, the Twelfth Amendment changed this procedure.*
