In the face of a barrage of depressing news stories from my own country and around the world I find myself wanting peace and remoteness more and more. When I go away on my little photographic trips I am in my own little bubble. I can devote all my time to searching out the beauty that nature has to offer me. I get away from work, home, stress and people. It is my escape. I breathe clean air, I smell the flowers, I lose myself utterly in the glory of being alive. I can hardly begin to explain what this gives me on a personal level. I am sure it keeps me sane in this crazy world though. When I am at home my pictures give me that connection to the feeling I had when I took the picture. The image, itself is only the capture of a split second (or sometimes a few seconds) in time but it brings back the memory to me of standing in that place, feeling the wind, jacket buttoned against the cold, wiping rain from the lens, shielding the camera from the sun (on rare occasions  ), the feeling of happiness I had in that moment. This is something of what I try to convey in my pictures. I hope, with all my heart, that when you look at my landscapes you can feel just a bit of the magic I was feeling, the awe I was held in, the rapture. My aim is always to do more than just take a picture. I really want it to be magical. I want it to have mood, texture, feeling, emotion and I want it to hold you. The following two quotes are on my profile and I think the photographers say it better than I am managing to do.

“Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.” Don McCullin

“I think about photographs as being full, or empty. You picture something in a frame and it’s got lots of accounting going on in it–stones and buildings and trees and air – but that’s not what fills up a frame. You fill up the frame with feelings, energy, discovery, and risk, and leave room enough for someone else to get in there.” – Joel Meyerowitz

If I am managing to do any of this, even on a small level then I will be happy. I will keep trying to do this and hope to succeed.

In a week's time I am going on a trip I have long wanted to make. I am going to Iceland. It will only be a short trip so I am hoping for weather I can deal with and I am hoping to see some of the magic of that most beautiful of countries. I am only there for four days so they will be long and full of mystery and discovery. I hope to capture a little of what it has to offer and I will be back to share it with you.

OK. Now to feature some of your pictures. As always I have been collecting your works and loving seeing what you have been creating. I thank you all for the friendship and love you show to me. It really does mean so much to me. Being here among you wonderful people is not something I ever take for granted. I relish every moment I spend in your company and would love to have dinner and/or drinks and/or climb a mountain with you. Thank you for being there for me whenever I need you.
Here we go then. A selection from the last few weeks of art from you......you amazing, lovely people
Please take the time to fav or comment if you see something you like. I'm sure the artist would love to hear from you.

I really enjoy to read what you write, because it is so similar to what I feel. Everyday is depressing me more and more when I hear what is happening around the world, and being alone, in nature, has a very calming effect on me and I seem to be able to find a little bit  of peace.
Anyway, thank you very much for adding me to this wonderful collection, Lawrence! Makes me very glad!

You, Lawrence, are one of the very few people I've never met, with whom I'd so much like to have a glass or two, in the mountains, someday. I think the chances of that are slim to infinitesimal, but you never know.

What a wonderful thing to log back onto DA to. :tighthug: Thank you so much for the feature, Lawrence.
I can understand how you feel. My family always teases each other on how we'd all like to become hermits out in the woods somewhere - but it's really about searching for something peaceful, isn't it?
 I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip.

Beautiful journal and feature, Lawrence! Like you, I find solace when I venture out to photograph, especially on dark, cloudless nights when I turn my lens to the Milky Way. This always brings me a sense of peace and solitude, with the only sounds around me being those of bugs, frogs, bison and bunnies hopping around in the woods. That being said, I do hope you have a wonderful time in Iceland and I cannot wait to see what you capture! From what I've seen, it's an incredibly beautiful country and I do hope to visit at some point.

Lastly, many thanks for the feature!
