A good friend of mine moved into a hospice a few days ago. She has been battling cancer for over a year. For a longer time than anyone expected she seemed to be on top of the cancer but now it seems to be on top of her. She is far too young to be going through this and far too wonderful but I guess the same could be said about most people in this situation. She was diagnosed just before her daughter's first birthday. I saw her a couple of weeks ago on her daughter's second birthday and we talked about the first birthday party and how hard that had been. She said she hadn't expected to be here for the second one so each day to enjoy her daughter has been a bonus to her. She knows her time is coming now and is amazingly cool about it. I don't know how I would be if it was me but I know I'm not cool with it when it is her. It is so unfair. There are some people you meet in life who add something and some who take something away. Well she adds something and has done ever since I first met her. I will just make it clear that we have ever just been good friends and nothing more than that. She is the best of us though. And the world will be missing someone special when she is gone. Her daughter is surrounded by loving people who will make sure she wants for nothing but she will never have the time with her mother that she should have had. I am already heartbroken over this and have been for months. Like I said though, she is cool with this now after fighting it so hard for so long. As I always say.......life is short and should never be taken for granted. Each day is a gift and something good can always be found in each rainy day.
I know I'm a great one for saying we should all try to live each day to it's fullest extent and fill our lives with love and kindness and all good things. Well that's because it could all be over before you know it. You may think you have years left and you may well have years left. Most of you probably will but you never know.
Things happen in life and you can find the rug pulled from under you. If there is something you want to do or a place you want to go, just do it or just go there. When it's over, it's over.

I went to Iceland in July because I knew it was a trip I had been putting off. I don't know why I had been putting it off but I am aware that I had been. So I went. OK. July wouldn't have been my first choice as a month to visit there (it is real peak season) but I had a few days so I went there and I can't tell you how glad I am that I did. I loved it. Everything about it. I will be going back to see more of it as I only had four days there. I stayed five nights in three different hotels. Iceland was so busy I couldn't even get three night together in one hotel so I moved around. The first hotel was a lovely little family run place with a great little restaurant and bar. The second hotel was probably a bit better than I would normally choose but it was very lovely and the people were lovely there too. I had one night there, then two further nights in the third hotel which was a bit more modern and utilitarian but comfortable and welcoming none-the-less. The landscapes of Iceland are something to see. The geology is amazing. The mountains are everywhere. I have never seen waterfalls like I saw on Iceland before. They looked great even in grey overcast weather. The first day I was there was very sunny. The next three days were more cloudy and overcast but the country is amazing and the weather just doesn't matter. There are black beaches from all the volcanic activity (I guess) which are magical. Sea stacks, caves, lava fields, hot pools, the geyser........and so much I didn't even get to see. So I will be going back. I will also be making more trips in general. Taking more time off from working. My work is getting to be too much. I am looking at ways to try and reduce it as life cannot be all about work. There must be more to life than that. There is more to life than that.

So don't let this journal bring you down. It has a sad story in it but I use this experience to ensure I never take any of my days on this planet for granted. I hope you don't either. Do the right things and make the right choices. Spread kindness and love all around you. Make your part of the world a better place if you can. Be the one who makes things better. Be the one who adds something. Don't be the one who takes something away.

And now, you beautiful people, you wonderful, creative, lovely, funny, mad, charming, friendly and loving people. Now it is time to feature some of your art. Please sit back and enjoy some from my favourites from the last couple of months. Get a drink and put your feet up. I hope you will find something to like and if you do, please try to find time to let the artist know. I'm sure they'd be delighted to hear from you.

I don't know if this is completely out of line, but read Digging Up Mother by Doug Stanhope. I just finished it, and I think it's the most refreshing and overall interesting book about... losing? Dying? Not only about that surely - it is a biography. I lost a parent to a cancer (long and ugly battle) ages ago and I still have hard time dealing with illness and dying. One might even say, I don't have a "healthy" relationship with death ;) But that book... I found it so comforting I forgot to laugh to most fantastic jokes, because they had such wisdom beneath. I bet you're cool with death and so forth, just wanted to recommend a nice book. Just in case. At least for shits and giggles.

Did you try goat's testicle jelly of fermented whale meat whilst in Iceland? I'd give my left ovary to spend few weeks in Iceland. Because of the nature. But of course I'd have a bite of the several local treats :D

Thank you Idelle. I'll give that book a read.
My mother died a few years ago and, at the time, it didn't affect me as much as I expected.
I have no idea why that was.
My friends who have recently died were all younger than me and all had various kinds of cancer.
I would say I have no relationship with death..........only that I don't want to die.
I have always been able to laugh at things even at the most inappropriate times.
I will surely read this book though. Thank you for the recommendation.

I was only in Iceland for 4 days and they were very busy days. I didn't have much time for eating
but I almost had some Minki whale at one place I was at. I didn't hear what the young girl said
so I ordered something normal and only saw the whale on the menu later on.
I wish I had tried it. I always like to try local food whatever it is. There is nothing I won't try.
Iceland is an incredible country for just about any reason you can think of. I hope you will
get there one day and not have to lose your left ovary in order to get there.
You will love it I am sure.

Have you seen the TV series Trapped?
It is set in Iceland. I am half way through watching it.

So sad. So sad that your friend will not see her daughter grow up - get married- have children. So sad that her daughter will not have her mother to be with her through those times. Life , indeed, can be so cruel. I'm so sad for you as her friend and for her and her daughter and her family.

You are right when you say that we never know what is around the corner. Life can change in a second!.

I'm so happy that my beautiful Granddaughter and her partner are living life to the full at the moment. They have been travelling through Europe for a year now, and refuse to let the terrorism stop them. They also visited Iceland and have sent home some amazing photos of the landscapes and in particular of Hayley standing underneath a couple of waterfalls. Absolutely stunning.

Your feature is beautiful :)

it is indeed a very sad time for everyone involved
however we must celebrate her life as it has touched
so many of us. Her daughter can grow up proud of
how her mother lived her life though she will be missing
out on a lifetime of being with her.
it does also ensure that I will never take a single moment
on this planet for granted.

Such beautiful words as always. You're such a good uplifting person. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Its coming up on the 5th year of the anniversary of my brother in law passing. I remember how that all was. And it is very important to remember to live as well and as full as you can while you can. I hope your friends passing will be as peaceful as it can be. My brother in law had no such luck. And its never a fun thing to have to watch happen. I send as much good vibes and prayers your way and hers as well that I can.

It's been a struggle at times. By now I'm pretty well alright but I have times things remind me of him. Although I will admit lately many of the things that have made me think of him have been good, things I see that I think he'd enjoy. It's bittersweet of sorts. And yes. Life certainly does brings things to a hard point sometimes. But, it's life and everyone has an end as well as a beginning and it is good to enjoy and live while we can. Never hold back.

Thank you for sharing this story. I have a good idea of the thoughts and reflection you are going through. It is not easy to see someone you care for go through this, especially when there are young children so closely affected. Strength to you and the family, and the best in thought and prayer.

My wife and I went to Iceland several years ago...it was a wonderful trip, and Iceland is truly enchanting.

Hi Larry, thank you so much for including my Inspiration Point photo here. Am going through the same thing, although my friend is older than yours. But still too young to have to leave the world this way. And so hard to know that she's in constant pain. With nothing we can do, that's the hardest part I guess. I, too, am trying to sort out the work so that there is more time to live. And the same for my husband. At least a change of mindset is a start. Keep being creative, because it will lift your spirits and keep you going. Big hug, my friend. :tighthug:

Its so hard to see someone you love suffering.
As I write this I am almost half way through a 13 day stretch of work. So much for my plans.
This is so I can go away for a week in October around my birthday.
I am also going away for a week in November
I may still be working hard but I'm taking more holiday.
In the new year I will start looking at my actual workload.
Being out with my camera always lifts my spirits as does chatting with my friends here

Always try to be there for my friends, Larry. Gld to hear that you will take a week of in both October and November. But that piles up the work on those other weeks of the month I know. I just never seem to have a day "off" either. I might not be teaching on that day but there's always something that has to be done, get done, or else. Speaking of which . . .hang in there!
