Underneath the arches by LordLJCornellPhotos Underneath the arches by LordLJCornellPhotos
This was taken in the passages that run underneath the ancient Roman amphitheatre at Pozzuoli. The feeling of the spectacles that took place there is palpable.

well the arch itself looks like a chubby guy in robes, and then the broken arch above kinda looks like a head :>  The bricks to the right of the doorway could be a hand :>

All that amazing brickwork, still there after so many years. Built by slaves.

The buildings are incredible. Well, that was the way their society worked.

Such brilliant technology they had, and such a sad use of it. A place of cruelty.

Indeed but that was how their society worked. It's hard to judge it against today's standards. I guess history will look at us badly too in many respects.

What an extraordinary place! Have these broken columns been delibarately arranged in the passage? My geography knowledge is at fault!  Where is Pozzuoli? South Italia, I suppose? Sicilia?

It is just West of Napoli.
I don't think they have been arranged. There are outer passageways which are mainly clear. The inner passage ways is where they store their spare bits of columns etc.

This is intriguing! Are the broken pillars there to stop people walking there?

No. It's just where they keep their spares. There is plenty of space for walking around in other passageways.
They didn't stop me walking there anyway ;)
