The stones resist. by LordLJCornellPhotos The stones resist. by LordLJCornellPhotos
Dunstanburgh Castle on the North East Coast of England in Northumberland. That's quite sunny for me.

"All day, all night, the wind explores
The gaps, the cracks. The stones resist.

As if it was searching for something lost,
The wind interrogates the walls."

from Dunstanburgh by Katrina Porteous

Northumberland has quite a range of castles by the coast - to defend against the Vikings.... Lovely shot!!

Some of them did arrive "early" - but I suspect they were a cause for the castle building... ;-)

Thank you Neha :)
It was the clouds that made me take this picture :) They form a natural frame over the castle :)

From this angle, at least, it looks so isolated that it doesn't even seem sensible for a castle to be built there!

There is more of it on the other side of the headland and it was a very big castle in it's time.
Here is a link with some history

Thanks for the link. I knew it had a role in the War of the Roses; I just meant that the framing of the shot makes it look really lonesome, especially against that huge dramatic sky.

Well it is quite lonesome. About a mile or two south of it is the small port of Craster where you can buy excellent smoked fish.
Other than that there is not much around for quite a few miles.
I have always wondered why it was built there but it seems to have been a project of self aggrandisement rather than for strategic defence purposes.
It covers a very large area of ground.
For all that I do love being there.
I actually only took this picture because of the sky. The clouds seem to make a natural frame for the castle.
