The mini stacks of Hellnar by LordLJCornellPhotos The mini stacks of Hellnar by LordLJCornellPhotos
This beautiful cliff face is found at Hellnar in South West Snaefellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. You can see that people will build little piles of stones everywhere.

Magnificent coast line! The stone piles are a bit of a plague in my eyes but whatever, they are far better than having love-locks everywhere.

we had a stretch of highway here that for years there were piles of stones along the space between the north and south lanes for a mile or two and if one was knocked over within a day or two it would be right back up nobody knows who maintains them

Did you build a plie, too?
A very photogenic beach, but uncomfortable to walk!

No. I didn't add to the piles. There were many of them.
You have to walk carefully here. Especially if the stones are wet :)

As impressive as dark and lonesome... Not the tight place to have a "sun bath"... What's the meaning of the stacking up pebbles?

I don't know the meaning of the stone stacks. I find them to be quite common now.
I have seen them in Skye, Northumberland, Iceland, the top of Ben Nevis......many places.
I loved Iceland for its beauty but also because many times it felt dark and lonesome.
I liked that.

I'm fascinated by the stacked stones. In Irish and Scottish they're known as cairns and are used to mark graves (and they can be rocks on a much larger scale too) so I was wondering if the smaller ones were maybe memorials or some sort of prayer or intention stones? Do please let me know if you find out.

Afraid not
theyve just become a trend
everywhere you go where there are small stones these days they make these little stacks
cairns were also used as way markers so you wouldn't get lost
these are purely decorative

Fascinating! Well they do look cool even if there isn't a deeper meaning to them.

Looks as if the Royal Society For Putting Things On Top Of Other Things is still a going concern after all.

My favorite kind of beach, Much like the beaches around here, remote, rugged, and photogenic from so many different perspectives.
