The home of the 9th Earl of Erroll. by LordLJCornellPhotos The home of the 9th Earl of Erroll. by LordLJCornellPhotos
From my trip to the east coast of Scotland last August this is Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire. It is also know as New Slains Castle as there is an Old Slains Castle not far from here. The castle was built in the 16th century but was still being added to and changed in the 19th century. Interestingly the roof was removed in 1925 to avoid taxes. This is why it is now a ruin.

Great photo! I always love ruins, but sometimes there's not a lot of them, but there looks to be plenty to look at here! And I love that little detail about the roof, even if it is a bit sad. Thanks for sharing :)

I love a good ruin. It's great when there is enough left to get a feel of the place :)

You can really tell the original walls from the newer ones, can't you?

Looks like it was built with brick and mortar instead of the regular limestone or granite that most castles were made of that still stand today.  That would be the reason for the damage that I see, in this lovely photo.  Still a beauty of a place.  Good shot.

Apparently the roof was removed in 1925 to avoid paying taxes and the castle was left to deteriorate.
There were plans to rebuild it with 35 holiday apartments in it but that all got put on hold when the financial crash of 2009 happened. Personally I like it like this but it would be a great place to stay.
