A Dartmoor pony coming to say hello on my short break last weekend. The ponies live wild on Dartmoor in the National Park all year round. They are generally very friendly and I love to spend time with them.

Hello, dear greasy horsey.
No signs of hostility it seems. :pat: Nice pony.
I would have preferred the focus on their head rather than their shoulder, though.

He was moving
this was just a grab shot with an unfamiliar camera as he suddenly decided to come to me
It could have been better but I'm happy with it considering everything

Yes, I figured that the horse did, especially the raised leg indicating it. :)
You got your :+fav: anyways.

Did you ever pet such a dirty horse? our hand will be silvery-grey after some time. :D
Oh, and let a horse always come towards you and if their body language doesn't show any hostility, only then, of course and start slowly.

They generally are very friendly on Dartmoor but you always have to show them respect.
Yes I do pet them if they let me. Most of them don't seem to mind but you have to watch their legs in case they go to kick you.
Spending time with them in the wild is magical though.

I can imagine, I never got across real wild horses.
I guess you need to be even more cautious, especially on first encounter - as with every horse.
Let them get used to your presence, relax, maybe talk a bit with them.
Let them get closer, if they want to, not going yourself towards them.
Etc.

Some people are stupid enough to walk towards a horse even if it lowers the head and laying the ears back.

Oh yes. You are so right. I spend a lot of time with them just talking to them and just being around so they get used to me being there. I don't just go walking in with my camera out for the close up pictures.
Always be at the front of the horse as well. Stay away from the back legs.
I like horses anyway and I do ride a bit but I find these wild horses to be the most magical that I have come across. And you have to remember you are a guest in their home.

On Dartmoor they are ponies.
In Iceland they have similar tough little horses but they are horses.
