These are the impressive ruins of Rievaulx Abbey in the North York Moors, North Yorkshire, Northern England. It was a very powerful 12th century Cistercian Monastery.

After years of holidaying in Yorkshire,w e only found this accidentally on our way across to Northumberland. It was so peaceful and here was noone else around...a lovely new teashop  i seem to remember, owned and run by the owner of the abbey.

Very majestic and serene and spiritual. The spirit of the monastery can still be felt.

Looks ominous. Imagine how this may have affected citizens back then.

Well it was a powerful monastery and was very wealthy but I don't think it was evil :)

Depends on the definition. Probably not for the time but in retrospect I would say that probably most monastries were "evil" because christianity had a much more oppressive nature in general.

What I meant with omnious though was that churches were built that way because it helped to intimidate the common folk and show off the might of the lord. The organ as a church instrument had a similar effect. Today, with all our knowledge, it's pretty impressive to look at. But imagine it from the view of a person who doesn't know science or technology, as a person who gets teached that god is going to punish him for his sins. Such buildings were surely going to impress and intimidate.

Maybe I'm wrong though and this was just a place of hope. :) It's just that I can't help but think of that stuff because it was abused so many times in history.

Its so sad that we've only just realised in the last century or so that its worthwhile to preserve historical buildings.  Imagine how beautiful this place would've been during its time.

Well, the thing is most of the ruins in England are as a result of either the civil war or, as in this case, the reformation under King Henry VIII. This Abbey was mostly dismantled in 1538 and 1539 under King Henry VIII's rule. Many many abbeys suffered a similar fate. It is wonderful that work has been done to many of them to, at least, conserve them. Personally I find the ruins very romantic and picturesque places.
There are places like Durham Cathedral, Edinburgh Castle, Canterbury Cathedral and many others if you want to see something still intact and in use. :)
I enjoy them all as I love history.
