An 11th century surprise by LordLJCornellPhotos An 11th century surprise by LordLJCornellPhotos
This was a surprise. In a little village called Lastingham in North Yorkshire there is a church called St Mary's Church. Underneath it there is this 11th century crypt. Quite amazing. I got chatting to the vicar and some of the people from the church and I ended up taking some pictures for them so they can make some new Christmas cards and postcards this year.

Wow! That's great. I'm working on a story, part of which takes place ins a refurbished monastery. This  'could' be what part of the interior looks like.

This is wonderful, reminds me of a friend's work who makes digital medieval scenes. And fantastic for the church that they got your free, highly skilled labour.

Underneath, but not completely buried, I think.  Light does come through the stained glass window.

Well spotted. I have checked on google earth and the church is not on level ground. You enter at the door of the church which is behind you in this photograph. There are old stone steps down into the crypt. It seems that the small window is just above ground level at the far end of the church. Everything below the window is under ground at that far wall. Most of the rest of the crypt is under ground. It is all, however, beneath the church.

Great shot! Fantastic lighting. Did you set up your own lights, or did they?

I wonder how old that furniture is, and what the chairs are made of...
