John "Stewart" Rhodes was born and raised in poverty of Detriot, Michigan. As a child, he suffered racist abuse from white children in the Grays Ferry, an area of south Detroit, which is brimming with gang violence and police clashes. The children attacked him while urging him to stay out of their park and keep to 'his own'. He would go on to be targeted by black gang members as a teen, who believed Rhodes thought he was better than, as he focused on his education to enroll into college, rather than joining up with them. John’s mother, a community organizer, who tried to make things better inspired John to try and make the world a better place. Once he finished high school, John felt it was time to leave home and joined the U.S Marine Corps. His mother didn't like it, fearing John would be contributing to the American military industrial complex, but John felt it was the only way to pay his way to college. As a member of the USMC, John excelled in full combat training and proved to be an exceptionally talented marksman, later becoming a pilot stationed overseas. Little did John know, he was being overseen by Guardian Elders of the Universe, and on a mission he was blasted out of the sky by a Manhunter robot, who was sent by Guardian Elders to test John if he was worthy of being a Green Lantern. Rhodey managed to land in one piece, and was attempting to get his craft to fly when inventor, Hal Stark clad in his Iron Lantern suit happened to be passing by. Stark had just completed his original armor, having avenged his fellow hero Yinsen Sur, and was trying to make his way to the American defense perimeter. Attacked by the Manhunters, Iron Lantern proved to John they were on the same side, and John without hesitation sprang into action to fight the Manhunter and his bravery earned him a Green Lantern Ring, which he quickly mastered, following which, they defeated the Manhunter. On that day, John became the second Green Lantern, to Starks amazement, and was welcomed by Stark to be his private pilot, to which John declines only to later reconsider and even become an offical superhero. After joining the group of superheroes, The Justice Avengers, John was teleported to Oa, in which the Guardian Elders welcomed him as the official Green Lantern for his bravery and heroism, but were afraid to tell John that they were the ones who sent the Manhunter after him, in fear of John rejecting his position.
