Martin was paddling on his surfski, away from the world. His craft; he'd have told you all about it; was a very specific kind of kayak, made to ride the swell, as fast as dreams go. That day the wind was gone, the sea calm. That was perfect on its own way, so the boy could focus on perfection, a tranquil struggle to make the most of each paddle stroke, to make music on the air, to reach the sublime from simple forms.
