well, I expected more of a journey through various landscapes with something about a bear, but it might be that Merida follows it or vice versa (kind of like the sharptooth in "Land Before Time") occasionally meeting it at various points. Maybe she's trying to get back home or has to do something that's far grander than simply running away with her mother for a little while and coming back. There was more potential.
