Have had quite a few requests for tutorials, but haven't really had the time to do a proper one - this little step by step of a single character from a cover done a few years back will have to do for the moment. Did a series of concept sketches - the client ended up wanting a naked charlies angel kind of vibe and this the process I used to paint the middle character.

how long does one like this take you? - I guess I could finish one in what ... maybe one or two decades?! ;)

It's many years old now, but I think the full image with all 3 characters took 5 or 6 days? Can't remember. I'm pretty sure it was quicker than a decade though :D
Cheers!

Great to see your workflow. Do you always start out in pencil or only ocasionally? Love the lighting set-up, those lips and eyes!

Cheers! This is a pretty old piece now and while I still always start with pencils, as I've gotten more confident with my painting, I do less 'detail' work in the sketch and work that stuff out more as I paint.

A couple questions if you don't mind:
1) how many layers do you use on typical picture?
2) how do you start picking your color scheme and palette? Do you (or did you when you started out) sample from real picture, or just use your own eye? What other tips on your personal color theory?

I really like digital painting, and am only just starting out, but my main problems are that the pictures don't really look integrated. I think it is probably that I'm using too many layers, and picking colors too randomly, so any quick tips on those topics would be greatly appreciated!

1. Number of layers really vary a lot. I usually like to keep the foreground and background on separate layers which gives me the option to reuse my painting on a different background and its quite handy to have things like a shirt, hair etc on separate layers so you can play with the colours separately. Occasionally I paint everything on one layer just for the fun of it… and other times I have over a hundred layers. Play around and find whatever works for you!

2. Picking a colour palette. I usually have a pretty good idea in my head of what I want, eyeball colours from various places and it also tends to evolve as I work along. I tend to limit my palette - usually a few dominant colours with tints of others within. Too many colours can get unmanageable and you lose that integration you were talking about. My own 'colour theory' is pretty basic - limit the colours and play around with opposites.

Hope that is some help and happy painting!
