I always start with a quick concept sketch - work out my idea/composition etc before moving onto a proper sketch where I work out my details.

Step 2 is the tight pencils, though this here is tighter than what I usually use before a painting, but no time to paint it before Christmas so I wanted it to work as a stand alone sketch as well.

Coz I couldn't find any grey paper to draw it on, decided to just mix it up together in photoshop. Thus drew the girl and the reindeer separately - making her bigger coz there were more details to work out. Background is a little pencil and smudging, but mostly painted over in photoshop.

All ready to paint in photoshop - just got to find the time now! :D

Cheers ma'am! Even though I paint everything on computer these days, I make sure I start with a pencil sketch on paper first. Pencil, sketchbook and my imagination is my idea of a perfect day!

Gotta dig the process explanation mate. Great look overall. It's also an interesting departure from some of your more whimsical human drawings.

Cheers man! Used some reference for the deer, very little for the woman - probably why its kinda out of wack a bit. As for the lighting - its a pretty simple rim light with a bit of reflected filler, which makes it surprisingly easy to work out.

when doing pencils, do you smudge with your finger or use a special rubber or something (to get light greys)? I'm new at it ...

I do a little smudging with my finger, particularly on quick sketches, but mostly just build up light greys with a really hard pencil (2 or 3H) and use it very sparingly on tight finished pieces. My best friend thinks I'm mad using hard pencils - she uses soft 2-6B's and gets amazing results [link] . I've had an art teacher who was horrified at smudging, and another who didnt mind it and did it herself. Great thing about art is there are many ways to get something done, and its really finding what works best for you.
Cheers man!

Thanks. I managed to get the look I'm after using a 2H and 2B for shading, rubbing the whole thing out lightly once to lighten it, then redrawing the dark sections. Not sure if its hard or soft pencils I'm using.

Since you don't seem to mind taking time to give advice: any books you found really helpful to get your drawing skills? Or maybe peoples work you copied and found really helpful? It's okay if you can't think of any that stand out.
