The light of dawn was glistening on the sea when the spirited Princess Evangeline came running down the path to the shoreline, accompanied by the faithful Max, loping up and down and around her. With more exuberance than usual, she stumbled and skidded her way over the rocks to reach her destination in all haste. Max took the opportunity to go romping through the surf, splashing up and down and covering himself in foam and strings of seaweed. Under the sea, a curious disturbance was at that moment arising from the sea witch’s lair. The two eels felt it first as their glazed eyes suddenly returned to normal; unconcerned with the change, they swam off about their own business, never once thinking to wonder at it, or at the whereabouts of their former mistress. Shortly after, there came a strange sound from the entryway: voices, first of surprise, then joyous excitement. The strange plants suddenly began coming to life, sprouting up quickly and branching out into graceful arms and tails. All the mermen and mermaids the witch had bound under her power were now returning to their proper forms, and all swam out of the lair with much rejoicing at their restoration as they went to seek out their respective homes and families. Above the water, a smaller company was rejoicing in a similar fashion. I apologize for the informality, but needs must!” And with that, she ran her father’s sword down the skirt of her wedding dress and cut right through the waistline, stepping out of the heavy petticoats so she could walk free in her undergarments. “Evangeline!” cried the king. “What do you mean to do?” “Go after him, of course!” Taking the sword with her, Eva ran to the boat, which the sailors had just finished tying back up once the captain and Lotta had returned. The sun was just drawing near to the horizon, the royal barge gleaming under its rays like a shining pearl as it cut a smooth channel through the rippling waves. From underneath, Goby could see the oars of the rowers dipping in and out of the water, moving more slowly, almost languidly, for they were sailing for leisure, not speed. The decorative trim on the side of the barge was carved in such a way that Goby was able to climb up to the lowest window on the starboard side. This took more time than he wanted, but as he climbed, he thought he could hear a strange voice singing somewhere nearby. The voice was vaguely familiar, yet simultaneously wholly unfamiliar, and the closer he got to it, the less he liked what he was hearing. For some unknown reason, he cast many a furtive glance at the moat, crossing over the bridge with unusual haste. Once he had gone, preparations were made for Eva and Ariel to be accompanied by Carlotta and Greta for a day in the town. The “buggy” that was given to them for the ride was exhilarating for Ariel, who had never seen land horses before—or “wheels,” which were so enthralling that he hung out of the cart to get a better view of them in action. To prevent him from any untimely accidents, Eva decided to let him take a turn with the reins, showing him how to properly hold them and steer with them.
