Description

This is the longest and most complicated book in C. S. Lewis's space trilogy; it's also the one you get the most obvious look at the depth of Lewis' relationship with Tolkien.  Aside from Ransom's character being based on Tolkien himself (at least job-wise), the most prominent factor is the fact that the book carries two plot themes both authors loved: the Arthurian legend and the legend of Atlantis.  This is set on the real-deal Atlantis, too; not the Ancient Greek myth, but the Pre-Flood First-Manmade-Civilization-Ever-Built Atlantis.  Thing is, Lewis doesn't call it "Atlantis" in this book; he refers to it by the name of Númenor, the Elvish word Tolkien invented as the name of the island Aragorn's ancestors received as a gift from the Valar for helping in the War of Wrath in the Silmarillion, making this one of the greatest literary crossover tributes of the 20th century!!! Fangirl Scream Emote  This island met its end when Sauron infiltrated the nobility and persuaded the leaders to attack Valinor, after which God remade the shape of the earth and Númenor was swallowed up in the sea; it's all in the Silmarillion, so read it if you haven't!

Here's the Hideous Strength audiobook: www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4Z39Y…; and a PDF if you need it: www.samizdat.qc.ca/arts/lit/PD….  I admit, I did get a little crazy with the lens flares again, but I love them so much and they were just demanding to be there, so I only did as many as visibility would allow.  There are so many characters in this book that I had to limit it to just the basic "good guys" list.  MR. BULTITUDE IS THE GREATEST; I have such a literary soft spot for bears! :bearhug:  The bear from Dumbo was the only bear I could find that had something of the impression I wanted, though; still, it's not half bad.  I did have a bit of trouble searching for a character for Grace Ironwood; there are so few older-looking Disney women that aren't the light, fluffy, short kind that I used Fa Li, mostly because she has the right hair and expression. There was no one else for Merlin but the legendary Yen Sid; I thought about using the Emperor from Mulan because he has the right beard length, but somehow I think Merlin looks better as a reddish-haired giant than the stereotypical graybeard we see him as.  Your thoughts?  Thanks!
