Just as Joseph had been taken to Egypt as a slave in order to bring redemption to his brothers, so Daniel now saw he had been chosen to be here. His mother had died some years before the Babylonians besieged the Holy City, and it was only a year since his father had joined her. But that was all a part of his old life—he couldn’t focus on that now when there was so much else to keep up with. It was bad enough to remember in dreams; he only wanted to find out what his purpose here was and what God intended to do next. It was likely because he was so naturally quick in languages that the king’s official, Ashpenaz, had shown him such favor. He’d already learned some of the language of Babylon from his own studies at home, and he’d done
