Messenger Meets a Healer - RP Part 1
After several quiet days it seems suddenly every dog and feline needed to have a message sent, and as rapidly as a couriers paws could take them. They seemed to expect courier dogs to be as fast a the sky gods themselves. Well luckily for them Stian knew he was fast. As long as he could travel through the open lands he would make sure his deliveries were delivered as quickly as anyone could want them delivered.
Racing over the open lands Stian was repeating his message in his head, so focused on the message that he didn’t look properly when he leap over a ledge and suddenly Stian found himself rolling across the ground, one of his legs a bright starburst of pain. The final thump landing him on his chest and forcing all of the air from his lungs in a big gush

The day started out pretty typically for Jaace. He'd stayed the night at one of the settlements, then headed out for the day to head to the next.

Joska was trotting along the base of the mountain range that made up the Western Tunnel settlement, his pace a more leisurely one than it had been at the start of his morning run, feeling the caress of the first of the days sunlight on his pelt as he ran down one of the well marked paths, splashing his way through a stream. And watching deer bound away. Taking note of places that always seemed to have prey lurking around, but not bothering to hunt, the tribe's hunters had been having plenty of luck of late, bringing in prey a plenty. And with lots of prey for food, came lots of pelts for crafting. Joska didn't envy the weavers, they being the ones to have to handle the bulk of the tanning work. The stuff used for tanning always left a dogs paws an

The next morning Joska rose with the sun as his mother had drilled into him, stretching his body to get rid of the kinks, shaking a paw he had slept on awkwardly to get the blood flowing again. He looked around at the others but both Spialli and Marite were deeply asleep, their bodies snuggled close together in the intimate embrace of a couple deeply in love. For a few moments Joska watched the pair, wondering if he would one day meet a dog that he would feel that way about, he didn't even know what sort of dog he was interested in.  He knew his sister had a wide preference but he just wasn't sure. He hadn't met that one that would make his heart skip a beat, that one that he'd want to lay beside each night and wake up beside each morning.
Shaking his head Joska quietly slipped out of the den pausin

Spialli was resting by the fire with Merikle and the Petite Jaro from earlier, she was resting against his side and walking closer Joska could see her belly was round with pups. He paused unsure if he should join them or settle somewhere else nearby.
The Jaros ear twitched and she turned her head towards Joska, looking at him with curious eyes, taking in his scars. Spialli and Merikle turned to look aswell, the Kings hall hounds tail thumping the ground as he recognised the younger dog. "Joska, my travelin' partner. How'd things go up the 'ill?"
"It went well, I spoke to Embra, she said if I come back tomorrow she'll have more information on my dagger." Joska said softly, eyes going from the jaro to Spialli.
"Ahh Embra, tough but fair, and knows 'er stuff. You'll be goin' back up then? What she don't know 'bout weapons

Joska lay in the clearing by his parents den, the broken tool between his paws, staring at it. Wondering about the scratches on the handle, the knicks on the blade. He wanted to know the story of this tool. Who had wielded it, what had happened that it had been left behind. Abandoned until he had tripped over it. Glancing up he saw his sister telling of their successes on the Rite, and his mother replying, chest puffed with pride at her future soldiers' successes. But Joska wasn't so sure that was the right path for him. Being out there having to fight each day to survive, it was hard and he had realised that without all of the tools they had, the knowledge of the other dogs their survival had hung in the balance at all times. The constant vigilance had drained him and he suspected, though he would never say aloud, wit

I Am A: True Neutral Elf Ranger/Wizard (2nd/1st Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-9

Dexterity-12

Constitution-10

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-15

Charisma-13

Alignment:
True Neutral A true neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. He doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most true neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil after all, he would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, he's not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some true neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. They see good, evil, law, and chaos as prejudices and dangerous extremes. They advocate the middle way of neutrality as the best, most balanced road in the long run. True neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you act naturally, without prejudice or compulsion. However, true neutral can be a dangerous alignment when it represents apathy, indifference, and a lack of conviction.

Race:
Elves are known for their poetry, song, and magical arts, but when danger threatens they show great skill with weapons and strategy. Elves can live to be over 700 years old and, by human standards, are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. Elves are slim and stand 4.5 to 5.5 feet tall. They have no facial or body hair, prefer comfortable clothes, and possess unearthly grace. Many others races find them hauntingly beautiful.

Primary Class:
Rangers are skilled stalkers and hunters who make their home in the woods. Their martial skill is nearly the equal of the fighter, but they lack the latter's dedication to the craft of fighting. Instead, the ranger focuses his skills and training on a specific enemy a type of creature he bears a vengeful grudge against and hunts above all others. Rangers often accept the role of protector, aiding those who live in or travel through the woods. His skills allow him to move quietly and stick to the shadows, especially in natural settings, and he also has special knowledge of certain types of creatures. Finally, an experienced ranger has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw on natural power to cast divine spells, much as a druid does, and like a druid he is often accompanied by animal companions. A ranger's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.

Secondary Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

“Sounds like a good idea to me,” With a sigh of relief, Stian dropped onto his side. His injured leg on the side towards the sky. After a moment he lifted his head and looked at his bandages, pleasantly surprised they were still firmly in place, he was worried his movements might have shaken it loose, the terrier clearly had some skills in wrapping bandages.

The next breath he inhaled brought the scent of an unfamiliar dog. Stian turned to say something to the other dog, only to realise he had already scented the dog. And while Stian had not known this other dog long, his reaction seemed out of character, or maybe this other dog was known trouble to the healer.

Stian grunted pushing himself back onto his paws slowly, “What’s wrong? Who is it Jaace?” The tone in the other dogs voice caused Stian to keep his own voice down.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I never caught his name… he never gave me the chance to ask it.” the blue-hued dog grumbled in response. The fur along his spine was bristling, making it seem as if he were angry and ready to attack… but if one were to look in his eyes, they would see only fear. He'd run into this dog once before and it hadn't ended well… He was a loner who seemed to enjoy terrorizing Asmundr dogs… Jaace suspected that perhaps he'd once been a Meteor dog, which would explain his hatred for the Pack. It didn't matter, either way…They we're in trouble.

A huge Rifle Royale slipped out of the shadows towards them, the fur along his spine bristling… but not with the same emotion as Jaace's. His was bristling with aggression. “Well well well, what do we have here? A couple Asmundr pups parading around again, huh?” The male's eyes drifted towards Stian's splinted leg and a sneer slipped over his muzzle as he realized that this was going to be far, far too easy… Jaace had slipped from his grasp once. He wouldn't escape this time, unless he left his injured friend behind. Either way, he wouldn't mind claiming the life of one Asmundr dog.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian felt a flash of worry at seeing the fear in the other dogs eyes. That feeling increased on seeing the size of the dog walking towards them. It was easy to see this dog had aggression in every movement. Stian’s gaze flicked around them, trying to figure out if there was any way they could escape before returning to the large male.

“This is Asmundr territory, so you better keep walking loner.” While Stian normally was happy to chat with a nonpack dog, this clear hostility left him doubting the other dog wanted anything but to fight

He lowered his head and pulled back his gums, letting out a warning growl. Steppe were generally more runners than fighters, but in this instance running was clearly not an option. Meaning the pair would have to fight.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh dear… Jaace had to resist the urge to bash his head into a nearby tree as Stian spoke up, daring to threaten the strange male… Didn’t he realize that they were totally outnumbered and at a horrible disadvantage due to Stian’s injury? The other male was going to crush them! If Jaace’s tail had been long enough, it would have curled between his legs with fear. He was definitely not a fighter, as he’d already made pretty clear… “Please forgive my friend here, he’s just hurt and cranky.” He laughed nervously. The other dog simply snorted in response. “I know where I am, and I don’t care what is or isn’t.” he snapped, now beginning to circle the two.

Jaace’s heart was hammering in his chest, his eyes flicking about for some sort of escape route. There had to be somewhere that they could go… something that they could do. His one erect ear pricked slightly as he suddenly spotted movement slinking about in the shadows behind the stranger… Someone lurking? Was it one of his goonies, or perhaps this was a dog that was willing to help them out? Or maybe just an observer… Oh Gods, he hoped that they’d help.. He and Stian didn’t stand a chance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian turned his head slightly to look at the Jaace, sure this guy seems a more aggressive type but that didn’t mean they should just roll over for him. They were Asmundr dogs and there were two of them against one of him. Sure Stian’s leg was hurt, but he could keep the other dog busy while Jaace leapt on him.

He turned keeping the royale in his line of sight. In doing so he got a good look at Jaace and realised the healer was truly terrified. Stian would likely be on his own. The other dog may be noble but he wouldn’t be able to lift a paw against this dog. Their best chance was for another dog to come and help. When the royale had moved to a point where Jaace was between himself and Stian, he tilted his head back and howled as loudly as he could, hoping someone would hear the call and come to investigate, surely in a pack as large as Asmundr someone had to hear.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaace jumped in surprise as a loud howl ripped from Stian's lips. Oh boy… this could go good or bad. The Royale male was surely going to be pissed off about that… but maybe there would be other dogs in the area that would hear the howl and come to investigate. Jaace's heart only continued to pound harder and harder in his chest as the strange loner snarled in fury. “You little shit!” He snarled, fur bristling. “You'll pay for that! You'll-” he didn't get the chance to say anything else as a grayish-tan blur streaked out from the foliage and slammed into him.

The Royale was sent staggering, tripping and stumbling as he fought for balance. Jaace's golden eyes widened in shock as a Taiga Gazal female placed herself between the attacker and the Asmundr dogs. Her fur was bristling with hostility… but she never uttered a word. Jaace didn't recognize her. Who was she and why was she helping them?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian tensed himself whether to dodge the other dog or to attack he wasn’t sure. The look on the Royale’s muzzle clearly showed that he didn’t like what Stian had done, he could only hope someone heard. He blinked as the female appeared attacking the Royale and sending him staggering. Stian cursed himself, if only he hadn’t hurt his leg he could help the taiga gazel. He braced himself, he may have been hurt but if a chance appeared for him to do some damage he would take it wounded or not.

A ways off a red Royale was chatting with his friend, an older black King’s Hall hound when he faintly heard a howl drifting on the breeze, the other dog looked at him askance.

“I think I heard some dog howling, sounded like they were in distress”
“Maybe we should go check?” The other dog said.
“I’ll go, you don’t have anydog here to watch your stuff, and Marite will chew your tail and sic the pups on you if you lose another dagger to a wandering nomad that finds it unguarded.”
The black dog nodded. “Take care Joska, could be a trap”

Bowing his head briefly Joska turned and started running towards the howl, his long legs eating up the distance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Royale male doubled back, now snarling in blatant fury at the two Asmundr dogs and the loner stared him down. “You bitch!” He howled at the loner and flung himself at her, jaws snapping. The Taiga charged forwards to meet him, snarling and snapping. She was doing well… until the Royale's large size began to work in his favor. In a split second he had her pinned. As her loud yelp of pain reached Jaace's ears, it triggered some sort of instinct within him. He wasn't hurt. There was no reason he should try to help her…

The small male charged forwards to try and assist, jaws snapping around the Royale's backleg. It felt wrong… so wrong to be hurting someone rather than helping them. As it turned out, the loner probably would have been better off without his feeble attempt to assist. The Royale male whirled on Jaace, claws slashing a gash above his eyes that immediately began to pour blood. Howling in pain and alarm, Jaace backpedaled quickly towards Stian.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian intently watched the two dogs, he wanted to leap in and help the loner, but with his leg injured he knew he would be a liability. The Steppe was more than a bit surprised when Jaace leapt into the battle. Though he had heard terriers were dogs of big hearts. He moved forward as the other dog moved back guiding him away from the fight.

Joska's paws beat a tattoo as he bound over the land. His ears pricked as he heard a second howl this one of pain. And from a voice very familiar to himself. A snarl on his face he bound forward his gaze finally finding the foursome and locking on the two figures fighting. While he had chosen the life of a blacksmith to create rather than to fight, his training was something he never could escape. And now he would put it to use. Protecting his pack and those he cared for.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He couldn't see… he couldn't see! Although he knew that his eyes directly weren't damaged, the blood that was pouring from the clawmarks above his eyes obstructed his vision… and filled him with panic. Jaace had always been very calm and collected with dealing with injured dogs… but he'd never been injured like this himself. It seemed that the tides had turned. Backpedaling away from the fight, Jaace tripped over his own feet and fell onto his rump, trembling like a leaf.

The Taiga Gazal female was fighting like a lion, snarling and snapping. She'd managed to get to her paws when Jaace had distracted the enemy. Now, she was beginning to get the upper hand. As a new dog approached her eyes shifted towards him, lips peeled back over her teeth in a snarl of warning. Was he a friend or a foe? She didn't have the chance to think on it too much, as the Royale slammed into her once more, his forelegs coming down on her back and knocking her to the ground.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian pulled the healer back away from the battling dogs. He moved in front of him and unsure what else to do proceeded to lick at his face trying to clear away the blood. “Jaace, Jaace its ok. It doesn’t look deep” He worked to clean the other dogs face, glancing back occasionally at the fighting dogs. He tensed briefly on seeing the other dog charging towards them, then relaxed on seeing a pendant swinging from his neck. Another Asmundr dog, and a big one. Surely this loner brute wouldn’t want to keep fighting against multiple dogs that were able to hold their own.

Joska’s vision narrowed till all he could see was the other Royale, leaping forward he slammed into the male, snapping and snarling he managed to grab a leg biting down on it hard. While trying to kick with his other limbs. His muscle memory of times practicing battles with his sister returned quickly as he struggled with the other dog.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The blood was practically roaring in Jaace's ears, but he still heard Stian's soft reassurances. They gave him some comfort and he slowly began to calm down, though he still couldn't see well. He could just make out a blur of shapes from over Stian's shoulder. It seemed that another dog had come to their aid… one that seemed familiar… but Jaace's racing mind couldn't quite recall who it was. Letting out a soft whimper, the small dog pressed his shoulder against Stian's, trembling slightly.

The tables had turned… the lone male was losing, unable to handle two opponents at the same time. Snarling, he lashed out at Joska, but was unable to land any blows. The Taiga female lunged for his throat. It was clear that she wasn't playing games and had gone for his jugular… She intended to kill. Fortunately for the Royale, he managed to hear back out of the way before turning and making a run for it. “You damn Asmundrs! You'll pay!” He howled as he fled, eyes briefly locking on the Taiga. “And you… I know where your family is.” He obviously didn't have any bite to back up his bark now though, as he continued to flee.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joska glared at the other dog, gums pulled back, he watched him flee for a moment before turning and hurrying across to the other two Asmundr dogs, his gaze locked onto the smaller one.

“Jaace! Jaace” He bound forward, unintentionally pushing Stian aside and nuzzling against the healer, working to clean his face of the blood. The sight of the other dog wounded has his heart racing, scarred for the terrier cross. He pressed himself against the smaller dog, murmuring various comforting phrases as he tended to his wounds.

Stian stumbled back under the Royale’s onslaught, but his reactions were clearly those of a dog who knew Jaace and he seemed to be doing a better job helping the healer. So Stian turned and limped over towards the Taiga, he stopped several steps back, not wanting to crowd her.

“Are you ok? That loner brute seemed to knock you down pretty hard there.” He waved his tail slightly to show friendliness, his gaze warm and concerned as he looked over the female.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaace's ears twitched in surprise as a familiar voice reached them. “Joska?” He asked in surprise, opening his golden eyes until they were squinting slightly. He could make out the blurry form of his friend's worried face. Yes, it was definitely Joska! His friend's comforting words and gentle licks were reassuring and Jaace slowly relaxed. The blood began to ebb, and he was able to see a little better. Oh how embarrassing… he'd taken one hit and freaked out like a pup. “I, uh… I'm not much of a fighter…” he stated sheepishly, ducking his head with embarrassment.

The Taiga female paced in a small circle, seeming to be testing herself for injuries. She was limping a little, but it seemed to be only due to sore muscles. As Stian spoke up, her ears flicked back towards him slightly. “Nothing that some rest won't mend.” She stated a bit gruffly. “Yourself? You seemed hurt before.” Her gaze wandered to Jaace now. At least he wasn't panicking like a puppy anymore. Annoying… weren't Asmundrs supposed to be good fighters?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joska wagged his tail as the other calmed down, he moved back slightly and looked Jaace over, trying to see if he had any other wounds. “There is a stream just over that rise, you can wash your face there.” Stepping next to the terrier cross he started to lead him up the hill. “What were you even doing out here?” The other question he didn’t ask, was whether Jaace knew anything about that loner that had attacked them, the anger and aggression he showed  was far and away above what nomads normally showed to Asmundr tribe members. “You’re a healer Jaace, in future stay back and patch up the other dogs after the fight ok.” He nudged the smaller dog affectionately.

Stian looked away from the other dog, embarrassed by his showing in the battle and inability to help. “Yeah, I hurt my leg. Jaace” He gestured towards the terrier briefly before looking back to the female. “Is a healer and was helping me get to the Shaded North Settlement.” He sat down looking at the female. “Did you know that other dog? I think Jaace must have known him and he seemed to know you, he said something about your family?” Stian tilted his head curiously.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah, a stream. That would definitely help him to clear his vision up. “Thank you. Help me get there? Vision's still a little blurry.” He let out a nervous chuckle as he rose to his paws, wobbling a bit due to his nerves. “I was just passing through and I heard someone yelp.” He nodded in Stian's direction. “He was hurt and needed help. He's got a message to deliver, so I was helping him to deliver it. That male attacked us…” he dipped his head with embarrassment as the Royale told him to leave the fighting to others next time. “He had the Taiga pinned… if I hadn't stepped in then, no amount of healing would have saved her.” He said softly.

“Ah, I see.” Jezabel stated, her voice still monotonous, lacking any emotion. At his inquiry about the other loner, she scoffed and some resentment slipped into her tone. “I don't know his name, but I know that he was a former Meteor Tribe dog that was exiled for some reason. He's been causing an uproar among most of the loners. He doesn't understand our way of life and sticks to his Meteor ways… he's going to get himself killed one of these days, and I'll be happy to see him dead.” The fierce female bared her fangs slightly at that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Sure, walk beside me I'll make sure you don't walk into anything.” Joska stood beside the smaller dog, slowly he started walking forward. He paused for a moment and turned to look at the other two. “There is a shallow stream just over this rise. We should all go there to clean any wounds you have.” Turning his attention back to Jaace he carefully maneuvered the terrier around a rabbit hole in the hillside. “Slowly does it. There is some loose stone on the other side of the hill, lean against me as much as you need to. Even with full sight rolling rocks can be tricky.”

Stian was slightly surprised by the vehminance in her voice, though he could understand it to a degree. Before joining Asmundr he had been a loner for a time. And had learnt there were certain things that one did and did not do. At least if you wanted to be able to interact with others. “I wonder what he did that got him kicked out of that Tribe. From what I've heard they are more the ‘Break the rules so now you die!’ type of dogs.” Turning he nodded at Joska's words. Then looked down at his leg, figuring the cool waters might help it and help him get to his destination faster. “I best report his being here when we reach the Shaded North Settlement.” He turned and smiled at Jezabel. “I'm personally glad you showed up when you did. Red over there may be big but by the time he got to us he'd likely have been carrying us back in a bag the way that loner was looking at us. Do you want to come to the stream? Once he's fixed his muzzle Jaace can check you over. He may not be much in a battle but he does a good job with a bandage.” Stian gestured with his muzzle to his leg. Still securely wrapped.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Thanks, Joska.” Jaace stated, his voice full of appreciation for the larger male. “You've always got my back.” Together, the two made their way to the stream. Joska guided him along the way, Jaace following his instruction perfectly. He leaned against Joska when prompted, thanking his lucky stars that the Royale was sturdy. Finally, he could hear the babbling of the creek. The blue-hued dog sat down heavily, using a paw to splash some water up onto his face. He bit back a soft whimper at the stinging sensation, though he was well aware it was necessary. “Do you think you can find me some moss? To help with the bleeding… Darn head wounds always bleed so much…”

“I'm not sure… I thought the same.” Jezabel agreed with the male's words. “Must not have been anything worth killing him over… probably something stupid. He's not got a very big brain.” The insults kept rolling out of her mouth like a river. “You certainly should… you may not be as lucky next time.” She shrugged her shoulders slightly as he thanked her. “Don't mention it.” Coming from her lips, it sounded a bit too serious. She was silent for a moment, obviously contemplating his. Finally, she nodded. “I guess drawing predators to me like flies to a torch isn't going to accomplish much.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joska wagged his tail pleased by the others comment. On reaching the river Joska looked around sniffing the air to make sure the other Royale was gone, before turning back to Jaace. Seeing the other male tense he moved closer resting his body against the other in support. “Yeah sure, I’ll be right back.” Without thinking Joska pressed his muzzle to the side of the other dogs briefly before hurrying away, mentally telling himself off for the slip and feeling his pelt heat up. He threw himself into the search for moss.

Stian started to walk up the rise. “Yeah didn’t strike me as the smartest of dogs. Though I’m pretty sure any smart dog would avoid Meteor in the first place. I used to be a loner, after I left my birthpack, which was in the south. But I’d heard of the Meteor Tribe and knew they were dogs you don’t want to get involved with.” A rougher patch of ground caused him to slip, grunting as his injured leg jars against the ground. “Damnit.” Stian growled softly working to get back up. “Probably wise to get yourself checked out. Plenty of animals out there that would be drawn to an injured dog by themselves.” Grunting he managed to get himself balanced and reached the top of the hill, sighing as he surveyed the rocky other side. “One step at a time Stian.” He muttered to himself, trying to figure out the best way to get down. A brief glance at the stream showing the Royale wandering off and Jaace focused on his own injury.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaace blinked in surprise as Joska pressed his muzzle against his side. The stocky terrier felt his ears growing a bit warm at the gesture, though a small smile had slipped onto his lips. Had his eyes been open when Joska departed, they would have had a thoughtful gleam in them. He'd known Joska for some time now, and there was no doubt that he'd become his closest friend… actually, now that he was thinking about it, he couldn't recall a single day since he'd met the Royale that he hadn't crossed his mind, even if only fleetingly. Hmm.

Jezabel nodded in agreement. “My sister was taken by them, and I have a friend whose brother was murdered by them.” She stated, not beating around the bush any. She had always been one to get straight to the point. Her gaze lingered on him briefly as he began to limp after, but she made no notion to help him. She'd already gone out of her way to save his ass. If he needed her help again, he'd have to ask this time. She wasn't usually so selfless with her aide. She did, however, slow her pace so that the Steppe male would be able to keep up with her a little easier while he limped.

Jaace's head snapped around at the sound of movement, fur bristling with alarm, until he caught a whiff of who it was. “Stian!” He cried out, sounding exasperated. “You shouldn't be walking on that leg; I could have come back to you!” He scolded his patient, though the fact that he clearly didn't have a mean bone in his body didn't make his lecture very convincing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still mentally scolding himself Joska ended up finding the moss by stepping on some, the surprising sensation causing him to quickly jump off of it. Glancing back towards the others he then bent down and grabbed a good sized piece that he had not stepped on then turned and trotted back to the healer. Dropping it beside his paw Joska looked at the wound on the other dogs’ forehead. “Here, I hope this is enough. Though I can go get more if its needed.”

As he was paused on the top of the hill figuring out the best path down Stian turned to look at the female. “I’m sorry to hear about that, for both you and your friend. And your sister. I have 2 sisters, one stayed with our birthpack and has her own litter by now. My other sister left the pack when I was just under two years old.” His voice trailed off thoughts of what could've happened to his sister as a loner. Particularly with dogs like that Royale roaming about. Deeply buried in his thoughts that when Jaace called out his name he misplaced a paw and ended up tumbling. Paws flailing he tried to stop himself, crashing into Jezabel as he fell.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jezabel simply nodded in response. She wasn't one to show a whole lot of emotion… other than anger. She was a pro at showing her anger… Jezabel had a lot of hatred in her heart and it had been plain to see when she had squared off with the exiled Meteor male. “Pack life sounds complicated.” She responded, though her tone was almost one of boredom, insinuating that she didn't really care if it was complicated or not. As Stian suddenly stumbled and fell against her she braced herself just on time. “Perhaps you should focus on walking rather than talking.” She stated frankly, though there was no ridiculing to her tone.

“That's plenty. Thank you, Joska.” He responded, giving his friend a tender smile. He grimaced as he spotted poor Stian stumbling against Jezabel. Woops… maybe he shouldn't have distracted him. “Let's all just take a breather here…” he suggested before turning to Joska and giving him an almost sheepish look. “I, uh… don't think I can get my paw turned the right way without breaking it, so… do you care to apply the moss to my head for me?” The terrier seemed rather embarrassed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian’s ears went back at the coldness in her tone. Seems this was a dog that he couldn’t befriend so easily. Though considering what little of her past he knew, it made sense she would be the sort of dog that tends to stay by herself. His pelted heated up after his tumble, and with a muttered ‘Sorry’ he pulled away from her and focused on his paw placement once more. His head dropping slightly at her final comment. ‘Idiot Stian, Steppe’s are meant to be graceful and quick, not stumbling about like gunni that’s eaten fermented fruits.’ He thought to himself, moving a few steps away from her to follow an easier looking way down.

Joska turned to watch the other two briefly as well, on seeing the steppe had regained his paws he turned back to Jaace, pausing for a moment at the request the other made. “Yeah, sure of course. There is no way you could get your paw that high.” Realising he was babbling a bit, and unsure why, Joska ducked down and grabbed up the moss again, moving quickly forward the moss dripping he put it on the healers head, his own head tilted to the side so the water trickled into Jaace’s fur.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jezabel merely flicked her tail slightly in response as the male apologized. She could care less that he seemed disheartened and embarrassed. She was getting more and more grouchy with every passing second, the adrenaline from the fight having worn off by now. She was beginning to feel her schedule and pains, as well as becoming conscious of the discomforting injuries that laced her grey-brown pelt. What a bother… She couldn't bring herself to just let them die though. Especially not at the jaws of a former Meteor. Jezabel sat down silently, awaiting her turn.

Joska was babbling a bit, Jaace noted. Maybe he was still a little amped up from the fight? Or maybe something was bothering him. Jaace would ask him soon, when they were alone again… Maybe he could convince Joska to tag along with him until they got to Stian's destination? He could only hope… he'd love to spend more time with the red Royale. Jaace grimaced as the water trickled into his fur, though he didn't allow himself to whimper. “Ugh, I'm supposed to be helping others, not be helped.” He chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On reaching the stream Stian leaned down to drink, then seeing as the ground under the water was sand at once patch he walked in, laying in the water downstream from the others, he let of a sigh of relief as his leg was submerged, the cooling water soothing it. And also allowing him to focus on his hurt instead of his earlier embarrassment. He watched the other three dogs from the water, muzzle resting just above the current, while his ear tip and tail streamed out behind him, also cleaning the dust, and other mess from his fur.

Joska haved finished cleaning Jaace’s wound tossed the moss aside, then regarded the wound. “It doesn’t look deep, and is nice and clean now.” He smiled at the smaller dog. “Everyone needs help with things sometimes. No matter your skills even the greatest healer can’t tend to their own head.” He nudged the other dog affectionately. “And anyway, you have two others here to tend to. I’ll go get some more moss.” Turned he leveled a flat look at Jezabel, eyes quickly sweeping over her, before turning and trotting back along the stream. For now he would keep an eye on the loner, she had helped his packmates and he knew Jaace would want to help her, it was in his nature. Though if she threatened Jaace in any way, he would make sure she understood that he wouldn’t stand by and let that happen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“If you say so.” Jaace responded, clearly not convinced, but smiled at his friend slightly. “Thanks a lot, buddy. That's feels much better… I didn't think it was deep. Head wounds just tend to be overly dramatic and bleed like crazy.” He rolled his eyes for emphasis. “Thank you, Joska. Imma start calling you the moss boy.” He teased before he turned his gaze to his patients. “Stian, do you need me to reapply your stints? Or something for pain?” He'd noted that the poor Steppe looked pained. “I can't give you too much, but I can spare a little bit.” He couldn't risk giving the male too much and making him sick.

As Joska gave Jezabel a flat stare, the grey-brown female simply rose a brow in response. Was he doubting her? How cute, considering she'd just saved his little friend's ass. Jezabel remained silent though as Jaace walked up to her and began to inspect her injuries. “Nothing too pad. I'll just clean then and apply a little disinfectant, then we'll be good to go.” He needed some disinfectant for his own head injury too, but he'd have Joska do that for him later… if the Royale intended to follow them to their next destination. Jaace would ask him when he got back.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joska just heard the healers moss boy comment pausing to reply. “I don't mind what you call me, Bunny boy.” He was pleased that Jaace seemed to be ok. The wound wasn't deep and the smaller dog didn't seem overly affected by the blow. Shaken maybe, but still feeling like himself. He waded slightly into the water scrapping together a larger clump of moss. The female had more wounds that needed to be tended than Jaace had had. Turning he strolled back along the stream pausing to watch the others interacting. Jaaces skills and desire to help anyone that needed it.

Stian lifted his muzzle from the cool waters and looked at the healer. “Eh? I'm ok. You should probably look at Jezabel first she's bleeding on a couple of spots I think. This cool water is helping me plenty.” Stian wagged his tail sending a spray of water about himself to show he was all good. The slight chill in the water having numbed his aching limb.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For some odd reason, Jaace found his ears growing a bit warm as the other male teased him by calling him “Bunny boy”. It seemed they had nicknames for one another now… Was that something that was normal for friends? Ah yes, pfft. Of course it was. Totally normal. Totally friends. Nothing else. He smiled at Joska silently as the other returned with the moss. He took it from him and gently began to dab Jezabel’s wounds to clean them. The Gazal female was silent, watching the males with a raised eyebrow and slightly narrowed eyes. There was a slight smirk on her lips, as if she were debating saying something snarky or teasing. Then… she did. “Bunny Boy and Moss Boy, eh? Cute.” she mused.

Jaace let out a nervous, tittering laugh at that and quickly tried to change the subject as he turned his attention to Stian briefly. “Okay good, I’ll take a quick peek at that leg in a moment and then we’ll get going.” His gaze shifted towards Joska now, still a bit sheepish due to his own silly thoughts and Jezabel’s teasing. “Do you think that you could accompany us, Joska? In case we get any more surprises…” Not that he didn’t want to spend more time with the Royale or anything.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joska sent a quick glare at the female for her comment. “Yes, packmates can give each other nicknames, of course as a loner I doubt you’d have known that.” His own pelt felt warm from her words, and as such he felt a need to defend his words. Plus a part of him wanted Bunny Boy something just he called the healer, and that the other wanted a nickname for him. He looked towards Jaace his expression softening.

Stian having moved along with the current towards them popped up at this point. “Yeah, some of the other couriers call me the “Speedy Steppe” He grinned at all three dogs, having sensed the rising emotions and wanted to de-escelate them. “Though if they find out about this I’ll probably end up being Stumbling Steppe.” He looked down at his leg, still numb from the water, a rueful little smile still on his face. Before turning his gaze back to them. “Your head looks a lot better now Jaace. And Jezabel you seem to be cleaning up well.” He grinned at the pair, tongue lolling.

Joska turned his gaze back to the terrier, slightly surprised to be asked to walk with them, though looking between him and the steppe, it was clear if they were attacked again they wouldn’t be in a good position to fight. And he doubted she would stick around much longer. Looking at her he could see she didn’t seem to enjoy the company of other dogs. Of course that could just be because they were all unknown dogs and males to boot. They may not be Meteor, but there were plenty of dangerous males out there that didn’t carry the yellow paint.

“Yeah, I’d be happy to travel with you guys. Someone has got to keep the healer safe.” He nudged the smaller dog affectionately. “Where are we heading anyway?”

“The Shaded North settlement.” Stian replied twisting around to untangle his tail feathering from some twigs he’d picked up in the stream.

Joska tensed slightly, his thoughts awhirl. ‘What if she is there? But I said I would go with them.’ He looked at the wound on Jaace’s head. ‘I have to go with them. I can’t risk him getting hurt.’ Shaking his head to try and get rid of his thoughts Joska smiled at the others. “As soon as you are done tending to these two let’s get going.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jezabel and Jaace both rose their brows in surprise at Joska's quick retort, though for opposite reasons. Jaace was completely surprised by the other male's adamant, slightly aggressive response. Jezabel was quite unimpressed, her eyes half-lidded. “Ahhh, you're one of those stereotypical types. What a shame.” She rose to her paws, pulling away from Jaace and started to walk away. “Wait, I'm not done!” Jaace cried in protest. “Yes you are.” She replied bluntly and kept walking. Her eyes rolled back towards Joska though. “You're welcome by the way, Royale. For saving your little boyfriend.” With that she gave her tail a sassy flick and disappeared within the trees.

Jaace wanted to crawl under a rock and die at that point. “Pfft. Silly thing doesn't know what she's talking about.” He tittered, not meeting Joska's gaze anymore. “Awwww, I hope that won't be the case Stian.” He offered sympathetically before his eyes shifted back towards Joska briefly as the red male agreed to escort them to the Shaded North Settlement. He saw tension in the Royale's muscles, though he wasn't sure why. Perhaps the slight confrontation with Jezabel… “Thanks Joska… I really appreciate it.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joska frowned slightly, he didn’t mean to chase her off with his words, the warmth under his pelt didn’t drop at all, increasing at her final comment. He glanced at Jaace then away, feeling ashamed, and embarrassed, along with a host of other emotions moving too fast for him to process. “I’m sorry about that Jaace. I didn’t mean to…” He trailed off unsure what he did and did not mean. He still felt anxious at the aggressive male and that Jaace had been wounded by him. His gaze flicked to the other dog and realised the smaller dog wasn’t meeting his eyes. He lowered his head slightly. Unsure what to do to make it up to him.

“Well...that was an interesting bit.” Stian piped up, stepping forward to stand with the other two. “Bit overly sensitive there...Joska wasn’t it?” He turned to look at Jaace. “She’s a strong dog, and I’m sure she’ll have other healers she can go to, we could go after her. But she might bite our muzzles. Three males chasing after her. Plus we have to deliver the message still.” He gave Jaace a pointed look trying to silently remind him of the Night Beast threat before turning and walking downstream in the direction of the Shaded North.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The day started out pretty typically for Jaace. He'd stayed the night at one of the settlements, then headed out for the day to head to the next. Being a travelling healer could be exhausting sometimes, but Jaace didn't mind it. He enjoyed seeing all the different faces… and sometimes exploring new places. He was pretty tired today though, so he didn't intend to do any exploring. The blue-hued male's jaws parted in a loud yawn as he walked along, paws scuffling across the ground as he lifted them half-heartedly.

The sound of a yelp jarred him from his sleepiness pretty quickly though. That didn't sound good… someone may need his help! Immediately Jaace got some pep in his step, speeding up and running in that direction. Hopefully he wouldn't trip and faceplant along the way. His limbs didn't always cooperate when he was half-asleep. Actually, they usually didn't.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian groaned, trying to remember how his lungs worked, after a few moments he opened his eyes only to close them once more as the world had apparently decided to get all wobbly on him. There was also a decent amount of pain radiating from the area of his left hind leg that made focusing on much of anything else more than a bit of a challenge

Frantically the black steppe flicked back over his memories trying to think of anything that could help him. But all he could think of through the pain was to keep breathing. Try to remain calm. At Least it was still morning and as such he had time before night fell and things got dangerous. Hopefully some other Tribe member or a friendly nomad would come along. For now Stian would just focus on breathing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The small male's paws carried him over the slippery terrain in the direction of the other's scent. It was growing stronger and stronger. He heard a soft, masculine groan of pain. Ah! He'd found them! Jaace charged up the slope, reaching the top of the hill. He could see the hurt dog now, a Steppe male. Jaace couldn't see or smell blood, so the damage must be internal… or maybe he was sick? Jaace didn't smell any sickness though.

“I'll help you!” The blue-hued male's exclaimed, charging down the slope… Mistake. His paws got ahead of him and soon he stumbled. Balance completely lost and momentum keeping him going, Jaace suddenly found himself somersaulting the rest of the way down the hill, legs flying over his head helplessly, eyes wide with alarm. This wasn't exactly what he had in mind.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian was trying to focus on the message he had to deliver. He was determined even with the pain in his leg and his chest to not fail. Faintly he started to hear noises of another animal approaching, it sounded too small to be anything particularly dangerous. Hopefully it would be another tribe member.

The black pelted male slowly opened his eyes, only to hear a series of crashes and an alarmed yelp. Before finding himself muzzle to muzzle with a blue pelted terrier. The surprise of this other dogs sudden appearance had Stian leap backwards, or at least attempt to only to let out a cry of pain as he put weight on the injured leg, causing him to fall back to the ground with a thump, further aggravating his tender chest muscles.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Jaace finally skidded to a halt he was staring directly at the paws of the dog he was supposed to be helping… To his dismay, the Steppe stumbled backwards and cried out in pain. Oh no! Jaace wasn't helping this situation at all. The Rifle Royale/Vildenmarks Terrier mix bounced to his paws shaking the mud and torn up grass blades from his muzzle. “I'm sorry! I lost my balance!” He exclaimed apologetically. He didn't even seem embarrassed, just sorry. Didn't he have any humility?

“My name's Jaace. I come from the Shield Wall settlement, but I tend to roam from place to place due to my profession. I am a travelling healer… Believe it or not, I'm not as stupid as my little fall there makes me seem. I can help you with whatever is ailing you, if you like? I could see you limping.” The blue-hued dog babbled on, never really seeming to shut up… didn't he ever stop to breathe?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian let out a puff of air, trying to figure out the other dogs babble. Even his sister Drifa would struggle to keep up with this dogs word flow. Though he was able to make out a couple of things. This dog was an Asmundr dog, and more importantly he was a healer.

“My leg,” Stian turned the soon to be bruised tissue of his chest twinging with his movement to look towards the offending limb. “I was running a message and there was a dip in the ground.” The offending limb was already showing signs of swelling. “I don’t think it’s broken. Just sore.”

Stian tried to force himself to his paws, push through the pain and deliver his message. Only to yelp when he tried to put weight on it. His paw and leg folding and sending him back to the ground once more.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The other dog looked down at his leg, informing Jaace that it was the cause of his distress. Apparently he’d not seen a dip in the ground… Poor guy. Jaace had fallen in such manners often… obviously. “Ah, I see. Well, I can get you fixed up.” The small male stated as he crossed the remainder of the distance between him. Lowering his head, Jaace fixated his gaze on the paw. “Lift it up for me.” he instructed, though his voice wasn’t very demanding or bossy. He knew that nobody really liked to be bossed around. “Can you rotate it around for me, please?” He inquired, turning his head so that his ear was closer to the leg, but his golden eye was still fixated on it as well. It probably looked very strange to the messenger, but Jaace knew what he was doing… as odd as it was. There was always a method to the young male’s madness, even if it wasn’t always visible to the naked eye.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian watched the terrier cross move over to his leg, then braced himself and pushed himself slowly to his paws. Raising the injured one he grunted at the pain pulling it in to his body. His body shook with the strain of holding his injured leg. He attempted to rotate it and yelp at the increase in pain. His legs struggled to keep holding himself up as he opened his eyes and looked towards the healer. Part of him wondered what this dog was about, was he listening to Stians’s leg, because Stian was well able to inform the blue dog that his leg was swearing all the curses he knew.
“I can’t rotate it. The pain” Stian lowered himself back to the ground, grunting once more at the pain has his leg struck.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaace winced sympathetically as the other male yelped in obvious pain. Yeowch, poor dude. “Man, i know that’s rough.” He said sympathetically. One would think that healers would grow numb to seeing dogs in pain, but Jaace never had. He just hated seeing anyone in pain, even if it was something he was unfortunately witness to quite often. A deep frown settled across Jaace’s face as the other informed him that he couldn’t rotate it. “Mmmm… Sounds like a sprain… Can you not rotate it, or does it just hurt too much? There’s a difference between it hurting too much to move, and not being able to actually move.” His words might have sounded sarcastic, but his tone of voice wasn’t at all. “I need to know if it can actually move… If you’re alright with it, I’ll grab you a stick to bite down on and try to rotate it myself… It’s very important that I have this information… I wouldn’t put you through the pain otherwise.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I-i think it’s just pain..” Stian tried to move his paw once more. Taking the stick from the terrier he tensed as he focused, he was able to wiggle his toes, the stick letting out a sharp crack as he clamped his jaws tight on it. He let his leg rest back on the ground, some dew still clinging to the grass a slight pleasant coolness. Then he opened his mouth dropping the stick and running his tongue around his muzzle, pushing splinters of wood out, thankfully he could taste no blood, just wood and dirt.

He turned his head to look at the other dog. “Can you give me something? I’m a courier and I have to deliver a message.”

Stian wasn’t sure which was worst, the pain in his leg, or the anxiety that he might forget his message, fail to make a delivery when he was still such a new dog to the tribe as a full member. He closed his eyes, muttering under his breath to repeat the message he has to deliver. He had to keep it in his mind, He could not let himself forget.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The messenger agreed to his test, so he quickly rushed off to get a stick. Fortunately, the forest was full of them and it didn't take him very long to return to the injured dog. He handed it off to the other, then turned his full attention to the injured paw. The other believed that it was just due to pain, but Jaace had to make for absolute certain… Jaace quickly set his plan into motion, forcing the injured male's paw to rotate… and it did. “Ah, good!” He exclaimed with a sympathetic smile as he heard the stick splinter. “It can rotate, so it's not broken.”

A deep frown settled onto his face as the other male insisted upon being given something, so that he could finish delivering his message. “How far away is your destination?” He responded evasively by answering his question with a question. If it wasn't far it should be okay, but he really shouldn't travel too far or he could risk spraining it even worse.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still spitting out fragments of stick Stian turned to look at the other dog once more, “I have a message I need to deliver to a soldier in the shaded north settlement.” Regarding the terrier for a moment and seeing the expression on his face Stian figured he should probably explain the urgency of his message. “It’s from the Western settlement, one of the caves used for mining gems has signs of a nightbeast prowling around, meaning the carvers can’t get more gems and the like for trading to get more resources for the tribe. They need some warriors to go through the tunnels and deal with anything that might be there.” Stopping his rush of words the black steppe stared at the healer, part of him worried he might have said to much, but knowing he had to get the other dog to understand. The message had to go through, nightbeasts could easily sneak out of the tunnels by night and attack tribe members in their dens. Stian felt a chill go through his body at the thought of being down in the caves and suddenly coming across a nightbeast.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A deep frown settled across Jaace's face as the male informed him of grave news. A nightbeast stalking the caves… none of that was good. He could see the panic in the Steppe male's face. “You're too hurt to go that far, you could make it worse… I could take you to a nearby shelter and run the message for you, if you like? I'm a fellow Asmundr and they're not going to think poorly of you for being hurt…” he hoped that the other wouldn't be too stubborn and would accept his offer. He didn't want to see him get even more hurt. He knew how some dogs could be though, especially when they had a mission to accomplish. A soft sigh slipped from Jaace's lips as be considered an alternative. “If you absolutely nusr deliver this message, at least let me bandage your paw and accompany you… you can lean on me and get some of the weight off the injury.” He had a feeling the Steppe would be more likely to agree to those conditions. While he preferred his first suggestion, the second was better than sending the messenger off untreated and alone.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian opened his mouth to object to the healers first option. It was his duty to deliver this message and it was a very important one for a new courier. He didn't want to be known as the dog that had others carry his duties. He closed it once more thinking about the terriers second suggestion, taking a moment to look the other dog over.

While he was one of the smaller breeds he had the look of a strong dog, and if he was a traveler he would have to have decent stamina. Stian knew he wouldn't be able to run the message in his current state. With how tender his ankle was he doubted he could even manage to walk it under his own power.

“I can't accept you delivering it for me. I'm a courier and it's my duty. But I'm willing to do the second one. Having you walk with me.” He struggled to get the words out, but knew he had to accept help for the good of the Tribe. Lives were in danger as long as that nightbeast was prowling about.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The way the other's jaws parted in the beginning of protest when Jaace suggested the first option made it pretty clear that there was no way he'd accept it. Fortunately, he seemed to debate the second one though and, finally, the Steppe agreed to allow Jaace to accompany. “Alright, but if the pain becomes too much worse, we have to stop. Sprains like this can become almost as bad as breaks.” the small male warned the other. He definitely didn't want to see his condition worsen… he wouldn't let it. Not on his watch.

Jaace pulled his satchel off now, rummaging about in search of the materials that he needed to make a splint. The small dog moved fast, quickly crafting together a makeshift splint out of reeds and vines. “It'll be very uncomfortable, but it'll help support some weight.” He informed the other as he set to work applying the splint to the injured paw. “What's your name, by the way? I'm Jaace.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian watched the smaller dog work, impressed with the skill and speed. He stood up slowly lowering his weight onto the bandaged paw. It felt much more secure and less likely to roll now.

He let out a breath then walked a couple of steps, feeling the firmness of the splint holding his paw. He would be able to make it to the shaded Northern settlement with this.

“Stian, my name is Stian. And it doesn't feel too bad. Certainly better than it was before”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaace watched closely are the Steppe mix tested out his leg. He was still limping, of course, but he seemed to be able to handle the pain and the weight on his paw much better now. No matter how many times be successfully helped another dog out, Jaace still felt proud. This scenario was no different, his chest puffing out with pride as he observed the splint holding up as it was supposed to. Good. They could manage this… especially with Jaace there to offer support.

“Pleasure to meet ya, Stian.” He responded, dipping his head to the other politely and wagging his little stub of a tail. “Well, there's no time to lose! The sooner we get this message of yours delivered, the sooner you can start getting the rest you need and deserve.” He started forwards, coming to stand beside the Steppe now. “Lean on me all you want.” He offered, before winking a little. “I'm stronger than I look.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian turned his head to regard the other dog for a moment. He let his tail swish slightly in reply before turning and starting to move northward once more. One paw in front of the next, he could do this. The healer was offering to let him lean on himself. But Stian was determined to carry his own weight as much as he could.

“It’s good to meet you too. Though the circumstances could definitely be better.” He carefully placed his injured paw down as he walked. “Of course, a healer is probably the best of tribe members to have found me. Would have been my luck to have a harbinger find me and decide to test their wares.” Stian shook his coat out at the thought. The movement knocking him off balance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaace gave a soft chuckle of agreement, his tone sympathetic. “Very true. I'm glad that I was passing through... it would have been bad if you kept trying to press onwards without a splint.” Jaace shook his head at the thought. “Well, I may not be good for a whole lot of things, but I am good for healing.” He gave the larger dog a little smile, flashing his teeth slightly in a friendly manner. He was a very positive dog, with a contagious smile and laugh.

“If it starts hurting too much worse, we need to stop and take a break. You better not lie to me either… it's crucial, unless you want to risk being lame for the rest of your life…” Jaace's voice had dropped, his tone becoming serious, but it didn't last for long. He soon smirked again and added onto that sentence. “.... and I don't mean lame in the uncool sense.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian kept his focus on the ground in front of him. But wagged his tail slightly in response to the other dogs happy tone. “I’m not sure I would have been able to keep going under my own strength, without the support of this thing.” His ears went back thinking about what would have happened had Jaace not came along, if no one had found him. Night would have fallen and with the darkness of night, would have came the nightbeasts.

That was the one fate Stian truly feared. He had seen nightbeasts during his Rite, spending nights curled up alone, not sleeping for fear that his flames would die. And they would come.

Stian shook his head, the other dog’s voice pulling him out of his thoughts. “I’ll make sure to not push myself too hard. Being lamed is not on my list of things to do.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jaace nodded his head in agreement. “I have no doubt that you wouldn't have been able to.” The blue-hued dog stated. “Your paw certainly wouldn't have held up… you'd have collapsed and become nightbeast fodder for sure.” It was a terribly dark statement… but it was just a fact of life here in Aedra. He didn't know that Stian had been thinking the exact same thing… though it wasn't a very uncommon though. Nightbeasts were always very real threats here… Jaace felt a small tremor ripple down his spine, but pushed it away. He nodded in approval at the taller dog's words. “Good… better to be out of commission for a week rather than your whole life.” He stated in a matter of fact manner. Slowly, he made his way up a hill, trying to support Stian as much as he possibly could.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian grunted in reply to Jaace's statement.

“I have no doubt a nightbeast would have found me once night had fallen”

Stian had seen a dog in his birth pack that had encountered a nightbeast. The dog claimed his wounds came from a rival pack and so the healers had done what they could patching him up. But he was too far gone. Stian shuddered remembering when he had gone to deliver some herbs to his mother and seen him. Not a dog but not yet a beast. The pack leader and his second had barely been able to defeat him when he became fully maddened. To have those screams and shrieks so close to their home. It was something he would never forget.

Stian stumbled slightly as they climbed, falling against the smaller stockier dog. He grunted trying to get his paws back under himself.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Well, we don't have to worry about that. I've got you, and we have plenty of time to make it to the settlement before darkness falls.” He attempted to assure the other dog… and himself. Even if they didn't make it in time, Jaace would stay by Stian's side. He would never abandon anyone, especially an injured dog that needed his help. As long as things went smoothly they'd make it to the settlement well before dark. They'd be settling down in front of a fire with a meal at their paws…

Ah, but something always had to come up. There always had to be a bump in the road. Jaace let our a loud grunt as Stian suddenly lost his tooting, falling against him heavily. Jaace was forced to stop his paws slamming into the ground, nails digging into the ground to anchor him. He didn't fall, holding the both of them up. Clearly he'd not completely been kidding when he said he was stronger than he looked. “You… okay?” He wheezed a bit, muscles straining under the weight of the larger dog.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stian gasped at a sharp burst of pain as he scrabbled trying to get to his paws. “Ye-yeah, I slipped.” With a grunt Stian righted himself, he lurched slightly the other way then regained his balance. Panting at the exertion he glanced at the other dog, impressed that he had held them both up.

“Thanks for the save. I doubt rolling back down this would do my leg any good.” Gingerly the black Steppe put his paw down. Letting out a rush of air, he started to move forward once more. One paw at a time, he would make it to the Northern Settlement, tell them about the nightbeasts and help the tribe. And this healer would be able to help him. Glancing at the other dog Stian wondered about him, what was he doing walking out here, where was he heading to. Stian could only hope he hadn’t ruined any plans the other dog had. Though he supposed if they were important he would likely have kept them.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Let's take a moment to breathe and get our heart rate back down.” He chuckled softly. Jaace hadn't been the one to fall, but holding Stian up had taken a lot out of him… even if he was sturdier than he seemed, he certainly was not made for strength. He chuckled softly at the other's words. “No, that would have ended quite badly. We'd go from a fracture to a break, probably.” He shook his head in dismay at the thought as he sat down to get his bearings. Hopefully Stian would stop and take a little breather…

Suddenly, the wind changed its direction, blowing the scent of a strange dog to his nostrils… “Stian, stop.” He barked at his companion, one erect ear slicked back against his skull. “We have company.” Typically, Jaace had no issues with company, but he'd run into this particular dog before… and he was not friendly.

Western Tunnels Settlement

Experience Breakdown:
Words 2,787 - 13 MC and 13 Exp

The stuff used for tanning always left a dogs paws and muzzle stinking for days. His friend Spialli had ended up kicking his mate out of the den for a week thanks to her experimenting with new tanning substances.

Walking up the trail Joska couldn't help but grin as he saw Alev, his self declared crafting rival, with one of the small knives in her jaws, scrapping away at a hide to remove all the fat and flesh so that the resulting leather would last as long as possible. Standing nearby and giving instruction was a familiar dapple grey Jaro, Embra, the head craftsdog.
"Smooth strokes Alev, otherwise you tear the hide and it will be useful for nothing but the scrapheap." Turning her head she spotted the red Royale watching them. "Ahh Joska, just the dog I wanted to see."

Joska paused, those words tended to not mean anything good from what he knew. "Yes Embra?"

Turning her back on him, Embra quickly sorted through the pelts. "I want you to take this pelt." Turning back to him, she held a pelt, somewhere between small and medium in size, its colouration a mix of black spots on a yellowish pelt. "It has been cleaned, and rested for a day in the sun so that the fur will not come free.  You are to finish the tanning process of this pelt for me. I expect it to be as soft as a tatzelworms belly."

Joska carefully took the pelt from her, realising it was bigger and heavier than he initially thought. He nodded to Embra and turned to head towards the blacksmith area.

He climbed onto a relatively flat rock with an old tree toppled to one side of it and placed the pelt down, spreading it out to study the lay of the fur and the patterns on it.

"So wha ave ye got ther'?"

Turning Joska wagged his tail to see his friend Spialli the travelling merchant leap onto the stone he was on, he did a lap around the pelt, looking it over with a merchants eye. "Nice pattern. I see why ya decided to not leathr it."

"It wasn't my choice, Embra ordered me to tan it for her, 'as soft as a tatzelworms belly' is the order."

"Tha' should be fun," Spialli chuckled. "I've gotta take an order to the Froz'n East Settlement. Was gonna ask if ya want'd ta join me, but I think you'll be busy for a bit with this." Spialli leapt off the stone. "Since ya can't come you should go visit with Marite later, get some tips from a pro." Still chuckling at the task set before the younger dog Spialli wandering off down the trail.

"Bye Spialli," Joska watched the other dog for a moment, then realised that visiting Marite would likely be a good idea, she had a lot of recipes for tanning  mixtures. And a lot of skills in getting the most out of a pelt. Folding the pelt careful to not crease the hide he headed down the path to Marite and Spialli's den.

Approaching the den he was reminded that it wasn't just Marite and Spialli living there but their pups too, in the form of an ambush attack.

"Get him!"

"Capture that Meteor dog!"

"No he's a nightbeast!"

"Meteor!"

"Nightbeast!"

"I'll show you a nightbeast!"

Joska halted lifting muzzle to keep the pelt from being damaged and watched the three pups go from attempting to ambush him to fighting each other. It was one of his favourite reasons for coming to visit playing with the pups and watching them grow.

"What did I tell you about playing on the path?" A voice that was both firm as iron and soft with love called out. "Oh Joska its so good to see you. But Spialli already left."
Carefully Joska placed the pelt down, resting a paw on it to stop any of the pups from stealing it, their mother talking to the Royale bringing their attention back to him. "Actually I came here to talk to you Marite, if that’s ok. I need some advice for this pelt."

The sand agouti petite jaro's ears pricked up and she looked at the pelt with interest. "I'd be happy to help you Joska. But first, you three" she turned her gaze once more on the pups who were practicing their stalking techniques once more on Joska, and as such jumped guiltily and turned to look at their mother. "There are a bunch of bone pieces in that den that I told you needed to be gotten rid of."

Joska grinned and lowered his head to the level of the pups. "You better hurry and clean it, otherwise when he comes back Spialli might decide to trade you to the meteors."

Marite grinned briefly before turning her expression mock serious. "Hmmm, we might be able to get some metal chunks for them. Maybe some obsidian if Spialli really turns on the haggling."

Joska nodded in agreement his expression mimicking her own, only for both dogs to start chuckling as soon as the pups were out of sight.

"I wonder how long that one will work on them for." Marite said her gaze looking after her pups.

Joska shrugged. "Once it stops working you can always tell them a messy den attracts the nightbeasts." He settled back on his haunches and scratched an itch on his side.

Marite turned her gaze back to him, her eyes bright in a way they always were when she was working. "Now on to that pelt. It’s a Civet isn't it?"

Joska looked at the pelt unsure. All he knew was that he was meant to tan it. "I-I'm not sure. Embra didn't tell me, she just told me to tan it. 'soft as a tatzelworms belly.'" He looked at the other dog askance.

"Hmmm," Marite walked over and started looking at the pelt. "This sounds like a test Joska, and I'm not doing your test for you." She regarded the big dog with a level gaze.

"No, I wasn't asking you to do it for me. I just wanted some advice, which tanning paste would be best to use, I don't want to ruin the fur pattern."

"Ok, I can help with that," Marite ran a paw over the pelt, flipping it over to check the underside. "It's been well dried, and cleaned nicely. Clearly not one of Alev's works." Both chuckled thinking of the fiery Rifle female. Turning Marite walked into her den. "Stay here I have to grab something here, then we will head over to the main armoury."

Joska sat outside waiting for a few moments before Marite came trotting back out and the pair headed over to the armoury. Marite now wearing a bag, bursting with various supplies.

"Seems you could use a new bag." Joska observed, as she placed down her bag and started to pull various items out of it.

"oh," Marite looked at her bag for a moment. "it's not normally this full, I've been doing some work in the den so I decided this would be a good time to take it all back. Plus some bits would be useful to make your tanning goop."

So saying Marite turned and proceeded to grab various ingredients, throwing them together. "I need you to go down to the merchants and grab any offal they have. Merikle is working today so it should be easy to get all that we need. Brains in particular if you can, just tell her its for the hides and she will ensure you get the right stuff."

Nodding Joska turned and quickly loped down to the area merchants would gather to sell things.

He approached Merikle's stall, as always he enjoyed watching the mute dog work, her eyes missing nothing and her ability to get across all messages without a word.

"Hi Merikle," He wagged his tail as he got to the front, reaching forward to brush his face against hers in affection. "I've been sent to get some offal?" Merikle's expression was confused at his statement, she tilted her head and raised her muzzle slightly, a silent question. "Marite sent me to get some for the tanning goop." Merikle's eyes brightened in understanding and she moved quickly gathering a bag filled with leaf wrapped packages. Joska took the bag his muzzle wrinkling at the strong offal scent.  He could also smell Spialli's scent on the bag and assumed the bag must be one of his or Marite's, useful as it meant he wouldn't have to run it back down. Mumbling a thank you around the bag Joska turned and jogged back up to where Marite was waiting for him.

"Looks like you got a good supply there," Marite nodded in approval. "Come along, we need to find a somewhere we can do this away from the dens. I doubt anyone would appreciate being made to smell what we will be working with. Or should I say what you will be working with." Marite smirked back at the bigger dog, who felt his belly drop with dread about what he was going to work with today.

The pair of them went back to the rock ledge Joska was at earlier. "This area is good because of the solid ground, and that tree can be used to help soften the hide. Joska nodded having thought of those things when he first picked the spot.   Marite turned to look at him. "Well Joska, are you going to get the supplies out, or just stand there enjoying the sun. I'll give you directions but you are doing this yourself. And we only have so much time before I have to go check on the pups. Picking up bones will only keep them busy for so long. And pups do tend to get into mischief if not watched carefully"

As Marite spoke Joska emptied the back, wrinkling his snout at the potent scent of the brains and other organs as they came free of their leaf wrappings. "what is all this for anyway?"

"You've notice how some of the hides and leathers are really soft, no matter the weather? Surviving places like the Frozen East Settlement?" She paused for a moment as Joska nodded. "Well this is the reason. You are going to make a paste using these items and rub it into the hide.  Then you will 'break' the skin, which is where the log comes in.  Rubbing the hide until it is nice and soft as a tatzelworms  belly fur." Marite grinned.

Joska winced as Marite from her position resting on the log guided him through the process of mixing the brain paste and then how to best rub it into the pelt so as not to damage the fur. Once she was confident in his rubbing method she had to leave, her pups had been without her for long enough.

Joska muttered a goodbye though he was mostly focused on getting the paste worked into the pelt correctly, not to thick or too thin in any place. Once he had finished that part of the work Joska laid down for a rest, his limbs aching from the effort. The warmth of the sun soon had him drifting off to sleep

"….ssshhhh"

"Don't tell me to 'shh' you ssshhh"

"Both of you sshhhhh, or he'll wake up!"

Joska was slowly brought to wakefulness to the sound of voices, young and very excited voices. That clearly didn't understand the concept of quiet. He grinned as he recognised the three voices and Marite and Spialli's pups, though he made sure to stay still, pretending he was still asleep was distinctly difficult as the threesome argued about the best way to pounce on him. Then suddenly there was silence. Well silence except for a few giggles.

"Attack!!" Three voices shouted in unison and then Joska felt 3 sets of paws land on him and with a chuckle Joska let himself roll, groaning theatrically.

"Oh no, I've been caught." He used a paw to gently push the closest pup off of himself, then got to his paws, making sure to move slow enough that none of the pups would be hurt on hitting the ground. "But I wont go down without a fight." Joska lowered himself into a play bow. The three charged him one more, crying their war cries interspersed with giggles of delight. Jumping on his head the three were chewing his ears and pawing him, the pups and adult rolled around, play growls and gentle (and some not so gentle) bites. All having fun.

"And what are you doing?"

All four dogs jump guiltily and turned to see a familiar dapple grey Jaro.

"E-embra, I'm sorry. I've been working on the pelt. I had to let it sit for a bit and the pups…" Joska lowered his head apologetically.

"Not Jos fault!" Alaia, the only female of the trio jumped forward staring up the scarred female. "We was practicing huntin'. He helped" Her brothers stood behind her nodding their agreement.

"Us pups have to learn the skills!" Aligok, the all black male chimed in, his tail puffed out behind in like a small flag of indignation.

Embra regarded the three pups, her gaze landing on the last pup Emre, sand agouti like his mother. "And you little one, do you have something to say?"

Emre backed up shaking his head.

"Emre don't talk much."

"But he's real good at listening."

Embra smiled at the pups then her gaze more serious she turned to face Joska. "I will need that pelt by morning Joska, so I suggest your friends here head back to their den. Before their mother gets any more displeased with them." She turned her gaze to follow the pups as they frantically rushed down the hill, barely able to supress her amusement. Then nodding to Joska, she turned followed them down.

After watching the others walk out of sight Joska turned back to the pelt, now stiffened with the paste he dragged it over to the tree and started to work breaking it. Increasing the hides suppleness with each movement. He stopped an hour or so later to go and get a drink from a nearby stream, but other than that he worked till the sun set and he could no longer see to work. At that point the hide was soft and supple. The markings on the fur still clearly visible and Joska was pleased with his work. All of the goop had cracked and fallen off as he had worked and had done its job well. He took it back to his den and hung it outside in a spot he knew got a lot of wind to try and get rid of the lingering scent of the offal. Though having been around it for so long he found himself unable to smell it. And even if he could, the Royale was so tired from his work the moment he entered his den he was out for the night.

Come morning Joska walked out and looked over the pelt once more. He felt pride looking at it. The markings clear and distinct, the edges of the pelt smooth, and pushing it with a paw the hide was soft and supple under his paws. He was sure that Embra would be pleased with his work.

On approaching her den he found it empty, though her scent was still fresh so clearly she had just recently left. He settled outside to await her return, though the warmth of the sun, combined with a lingering tiredness from the day before had him drift off to sleep. He would wake a few hours later Embra having come by at some point and taken her pelt, leaving him some gems and leather as a reward for a good job.

How to tan a hide-HomeRP
Joska may have been a carver for awhile but Embra likes to remind him that there is still much to learn, such as how to best treat a pelt that will be used for display and as such one doesn't want the markings damaged.
With a suprise inclusion of Spialli, Marite and their pups! And a brief inclusion of Merikle.
